April Jean Sorensen, 27, was easy-going, athletic, and a hard-working student at the Rochester Community and Technical College, studying to become a dental hygienist...

On April 17, 2007, April's TV technician arrived at her home at 12:30 p.m., for a scheduled visit. He saw smoke coming from inside the house and immediately called 911.

When police and investigators arrived at the scene, they determined that the fire was not an accident.

After the fire was extinguished, police found April's body inside her bedroom. Autopsy reports confirmed she had been stabbed and strangled to death.

Sorensen worked at UPS Inc. in Rochester from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. the morning she died, then attended class from 10 a.m. to 10:50 a.m., leaving a window of less than two hours from the time she returned home to the time she was murdered and her house was set on fire.

Sorensen and her husband, Joshua, had lived in the home for four years. He and the TV serviceman who reported the fire have both been cleared of the crime, authorities said. Josh Sorensen moved from Rochester after the murder.

Investigators have collected DNA evidence, but won't specify what or where it was found. There's been no match, pending further forensic technology.

Suspects
Shortly after Sorensen’s murder, police worked with the FBI to create a likely profile of the suspect.

Former police Capt. Brian Winters said in late 2007 that the attacker was probably a single male who could blend into residential neighborhoods easily without raising suspicion. Winters said evidence indicated the offender was comfortable being in a stranger's home uninvited, meaning he likely had broken into or stolen property from other homes.

Both the cable TV technician who called in the fire and Sorensen’s husband have been cleared of any involvement in the crime.

Over the years since the murder, there have been people of interest. In 2017, Sherwin told the Rochester Post Bulletin that some of the people police have investigated have “extensive criminal history or who may have had these types of targeted attacks in the past – which would fit the profile.”

''Capt. Sherwin believes this case is solvable. “We still have a wildcard in our pocket,” he said.

While he didn’t want to reveal specific details of the investigation, Capt. Sherwin thinks that DNA technology will eventually improve enough to clearly identify April’s killer.''

''ROCHESTER, Minn. - The Rochester Police Department is once again bringing cold cases back to the forefront.

"Fifteen years ago on April 17, 2007, April Jean Sorensen was killed in her home in northwest Rochester. A TV technician arrived at the house for a scheduled visit at 12:30 p.m. and saw smoke coming through a window. He immediately called 911. First Responders arrived on scene and determined that the fire was not an accident. Once the fire was extinguished, April’s body was discovered in her bedroom. Sorensen was 27 at the time of her death.
"She was close with her family. They shared a love for running and ran several races together. April had no enemies and was very well liked by everyone. Her death was untimely and a huge loss for her family, friends and our community. ''Fourteen years ago, April Jean Sorensen, a 27-year-old aspiring dental hygienist, wife and marathon runner had a day that began like any other. She worked her regular morning shift at UPS and then went to class at Rochester Community and Technical College.''

''Rochester police Lt. Tom Faudskar said this week that the case is still open and active and investigators continue to follow up on tips. The Rochester Police Department is expected to host a news conference later this month about Sorensen's April 17, 2007, murder.''

''The door to the bedroom had been closed, allowing the fire to burn hot enough to damage the contents of the room so that very little forensic evidence could be recovered.

Still, investigators collected hundreds of pieces of evidence from the home. Some of that evidence contained human DNA but there's been no match — yet.''

Investigators have reopened a cold case murder of a 27-year-old woman in her Rochester home 16 years ago.

April J. Sorensen was found dead on April 17, 2007 in northwest Rochester. An autopsy revealed Sorensen had been stabbed and strangled to death.

Police said a TV technician went to the home for a scheduled visit at 12:30 p.m. and saw smoke coming through the window, a fire which had later determined to have been started intentionally.

Sorensen's body was found in her bedroom after the flames were extinguished.

Rochester police said Sorensen was studying to become a dental hygienist at the time and "worked hard at everything she did." She was also close with family.

"They shared a love for running and ran several races together. April had no enemies and was very well liked by everyone," the police department said in a Facebook post.

I found an excellent article with more details. it’s from April 2007.
it mentions that the husband was eliminated as a suspect because he was at work at the time.
