Killer Entered Woman's Apartment Through Unlocked Window: Cops

Tiffany Thrasher, 33, was strangled in her Schaumburg apartment.

SCHAUMBURG, IL — A murderer likely got into a Schaumburg woman's apartment through an unlocked ground-floor window, police said Tuesday. Tiffany Thrasher, 33, was found dead in her home in the 2600 block of Clipper Drive Sunday after she missed an Easter morning church service, prompting friends to ask police to conduct a well-being check. Police said Thrasher was killed sometime between arriving home from dinner with friends at around 8 p.m. Saturday and 11:45 a.m. Sunday.

Detectives scoured the scene, coming to the conclusion that the killer likely accessed the apartment through the window and may have sexually assaulted Thrasher, police said. Investigators are awaiting crime lab results, according to a press release.

Schaumburg police were called to an apartment in the 2600 block of Clipper Dr on Sunday for a well being check. Police say they entered the apartment and discovered the body of 33-year-old Tiffany Thrasher.

An autopsy was conducted and determined the cause of death to be strangulation, police said in a statement.

Police say the woman was killed between 8 p.m. on Saturday and 11:45 a.m. Sunday.

At this time, police have no one in custody.

Neighbors say they're feeling unnerved by the homicide and what feels like very little information being released by police investigating the death.

Karen Cameron, who is retired and staying with a friend in a condo adjacent to Thrasher's apartment, said there's been constant activity in the area -- made up of primarily multifamily housing -- since the discovery Sunday.

On Monday, fire trucks lifted officials onto the roof of the apartment building and public works department workers removed all the manhole covers as investigators continued to comb the grass and other areas in and around Thrasher's apartment, Cameron said.

Cameron spoke to Thrasher's upstairs neighbor, who has been displaced from her apartment in Thrasher's four-unit building while police continue to investigate. That neighbor told Cameron she was home Saturday evening and heard nothing unusual.

“We have increased the patrols in that area and we have additional officers in that area while we are conducting this investigation,” Schaumburg Police Sgt. Christy Lindhurst says. “We would like the public to be cognizant of their surroundings.”

Police are now speaking with Thrasher’s family and friends and are asking anyone with information or surveillance video to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at (847) 882-3534.

Thrasher was last seen in Naperville Saturday evening. She had dined with friends before heading home.

Shocked neighbors told ABC Chicago that Thrasher's murder has left them frightened. "I'm freaked out. I've lived here for nine years and I can leave my car door open. Nothing happens," one woman said. Thrasher — who was supposed to sing with the church choir on Easter — was a Texas native and had recently moved into the apartment, which she shared with a roommate who was away from the weekend, ABC reported.

Schaumburg police on Wednesday issued a community alert and said they are stepping up patrols and detectives in the area. Police urged residents to follow these home safety tips:

Residents are reminded to utilize a peep hole or window to see who is at the door before opening the door. Do not allow any strangers into your home.
Lock all windows and doors.
Use a solid deadbolt lock with minimum 1-inch throw.
Have trees and bushes trimmed to avoid areas of concealment around your home.
Interior lighting is necessary to show signs of occupancy/activity inside a residence particularly at night.
Utilize external lights (front and back). Motion sensor activated lights are effective.
Police also urged citizens to call 911 to report any suspicious people or vehicles, taking care to note the make, model and color of the vehicle and license plate if possible, along with a description of any suspicious people such as race, height, weight, hair color, eye color, age, clothing description and any distinctive features the person may have.

I'm 10 minutes away from this place. This is a very nice complex; ironically I was just looking at this place in case I decide to leave my own complex, next year. Very safe area.

Frightening! I am also in a ground floor unit and often sleep with my bedroom window open. Hey, it's Chicago-land.....we can't do that many months of the year. But 2 months each spring and fall, we have decent weather (sort of). I have been researching security for 1st floor windows. Ugh.

This poor woman.

Primetime Justice on HLN profiled the case this evening and interviewed her friend 'Jeff' who had dinner with her the night before. He stated that she had been casually online dating and also had an 'on again/off again' boyfriend. At the time of the dinner he believed they were 'off'.

According to her Facebook, church and old friends were what she lived for.

"She lived her life for God, that's all her Facebook and what everything was about, was her going to church," said one of Thrasher's friends who asked not to be identified.

She hadn't lived in the apartment, which she shared with a female roommate, long. Investigators said Thrasher's roommate was out of town over Easter weekend.

A small boarded up window on the apartment indicates someone may have broken in.

"As for how the offender got in or exited, I don't have information," Sgt. Lindhurst said.

"I heard the thing about the break-in but, um, what I seen on her Facebook that last week that she had made a post about an ex getting in touch with her, and kinda getting her down," her friend said.

Thrasher had a female roommate who was out of town for the holiday weekend, authorities said.

Neighbors say it was a typical, quiet Sunday until police swarmed the complex that morning.

Police say Thrasher was strangled sometime between Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 11:45 a.m.

Her family said in a statement:

"We're grieving with family members. It's a personal loss to each of us."

They encourage anyone with information to come forward to the authorities.

A woman who was found strangled to death in an apartment Sunday in Schaumburg may have been sexually assaulted, authorities said Tuesday, prompting a warning from authorities and an increase in area patrols.

Schaumburg police responded to a 911 call for a well-being check on Sunday at an apartment on the 2600 block of Clipper Drive. Friends of Tiffany Thrasher, 33, were waiting outside of the apartment when officers arrived on the scene, police said in a news release.

Police are waiting for crime lab results to confirm whether or not the woman was sexually assaulted, the department says.
