Louis Gonick, a 21-year-old UBC student, has gone missing. He was last seen by a friend in the UBC area on April 16.

Gonick is described as a Hispanic male (from South America) with brown hair and brown eyes, who is approximately 5 feet 7 inches and 140 pounds. He was last known to be wearing a dark blue shirt, blue jeans, a dark blue jacket and a grey scarf.

Police say Gonick has never been reported missing before and his being out of contact this way is unusual.

Anyone with information on Gonick's whereabouts is asked to contact University RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

Local, and had seen nothing on this. If someone was missing in say, downtown Vancouver, usually cross streets or a general area of the last place they were seen would be provided. The University campus is actually larger than downtown. Busses lead from the campus back to Vancouver as well as there are many trails and beaches in the immediate area.

Gonick’s friends have been putting up posters around Vancouver and UBC to help find him. They say police have received a number of tips already.

Nothing new in the last couple of days. It's the end of Winter term at UBC, all of the undergraduates have 2.5 weeks of final exams ending on the 26th. I haven't been out to campus this week as my grad program does not have final exams. Many students leave campus as soon as their exams are done so things are very quiet towards the end of April. Summer starts in mid May.

All accounts show Louis as a pretty normal UBC upperclassman with plenty of extra curricular activities. This one could go any number of ways. I'm a little worried about his "last seen at..." because there have been differing reports either as on campus on the night of the 16th or downtown Vancouver the same evening. I'm remembering Natsumi Kogawa from this past summer, she went missing from downtown and that did not have a happy ending.

I just saw this post for the first time. He's been gone a while already hasn't he? Almost a week with no word? That's troubling.

Louis is adorable, I imagine every older woman he met wanted him to meet her daughter. 😊 I hope he comes home safe and soon.

There may be some new information on this case. Unfortunately I'm seeing this posted on Reddit (r/ubc) and on the UBC Ecuadorian Students Association page on Facebook so it has to be taken as rumor. I'm going to keep following but I'll reserve my comments till LE or MSM have something that can corroborate what I've seen this afternoon.

Also, may be unrelated but a DB was found today in Richmond. It's being deemed a "targeted homicide". Does this rule out our squeaky clean University student ?

“We already posted a lot of posters around the city, but a lot of people don’t know what’s happening,” said Génesis Daniela Gallegos Marín, a first-year UBC student and ESA VP Events. “We just want to just show Vancouver [what’s going on] and just maybe someone will help save him.”

Supported by the Ecuadorian Association of British Columbia, dozens of UBC students and community members handed out flyers with Gonick’s picture and spoke to passersby about his disappearance. Organizers stressed that expanding the scope of the search beyond UBC will be essential to finding Gonick.

IMO, unlikely to be him. That statement often goes hand in hand with organized crime. But, until we hear more, it's a possibility.

The UBC paper has written an article about today's search party. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to link to that because it's not really MSM. But, it talks about the direction from UBC they were searching, and it was away from Richmond.

Yes, I agree that the unidentified body is probably not Louis. Targeted homicide means two things to me: that LE already know the victim and feel there could be reason this person might have been murdered or execution style injuries. I also agree that the University newspaper is not MSM.

I did not mention the search as I could not find info anywhere that it was a sanctioned search. Law enforcement are usually up front when they ask the public for search help, it would have been on all the news outlets. So I'm not going to comment any further on this for now. We'll see if it makes the news tomorrow.

I am so worried for Louis. IMO the silence from LE means something, I'm just not sure what. There have been many missing persons cases locally where LE has released more info and where MSM has provided more coverage. This has not been covered well, and because his family is not local it seems to have been left in the hands of students to get any information out.

RCMP say Gonick, 21, was last seen by a friend at the UBC Point Grey campus on Sunday, April 16. However, the UBC newspaper is reporting a search party has been looking in an area of Stanley Park.
