Roommate reported him missing 2 weeks after he last saw him. He claimed that John went 'camping/hiking' alone in the Shasta Costa creek area between Curry, and Josephine counties, and that he had not had contact with him since. The area was searched thoroughly, and nothing was found. Several months later a crew timber cruising found a campsite torn apart by bears...

The following entry is summarized from Curry County Sheriff's Office report dated Oct 16, 1989: Deputy responded on Oct 14, 1989 to a campsite where MP's property was found. Location of the site was recorded as T34s R11w, middle of southeast corner of section 36. Access to the site was from Snout Creek Road to the 110 spur road, from the 110 spur road a trail followed down a ridge to the site where the camping gear was found. The gear was strewn over an area of about 75 feet. It appeared that a bear had removed the contents from the pack in search of food. All the canned food items had been opened by bear, and majority of everything else including the pack had been damaged. The tent was not erected and the tent poles were still in the pack.

Circumstances: Roommate reported him missing 2 weeks after he last saw him. He claimed that John went 'camping/hiking' alone in the Shasta Costa creek area between Curry, and Josephine counties, and that he had not had contact with him since.

The area was searched thoroughly, and nothing was found. Several months later a crew timber cruising found a campsite torn apart by bears, and my brothers id, as well as his tent, that was still in its case, obviously never put up, with snow on the ground, at the time of his disappearance.

Missing for 35 years...

There are no photographs of this gentleman readily available, but his story is still worth sharing.

John Fred Daugherty was last seen alive on April 15th, 1988 by his roommate, who claimed that John had planned on hiking and camping in a heavily wooded area between Josephine and Curry counties. After he left, John’s roommate didn’t hear from him for two weeks, and finally decided to report John to the authorities as a missing adult.

The area that John was supposedly going to camp at was searched by law enforcement, who at the time found nothing of note. Months passed until, on October 14th, 1989, a crew of people who were “timber cruising” found a campsite that had been torn apart, presumably by wildlife. They alerted the authorities, and the Curry County Sheriff’s Office got to work.

The following entry is summarized from Curry County Sheriff's Office report dated Oct 16, 1989:
Deputy responded on Oct 14, 1989 to a campsite where MP's property was found. Location of the site was recorded as T34s R11w, middle of southeast corner of section 36. It is widely believed that John Daugherty was killed by wildlife in the woods, but it is still a tragic story, and although Curry County handled the investigation, he is formally listed in NAMUS as having gone missing from Josephine County.
John Fred Daugherty was 24 years old at the time of his disappearance. He was a white male, 6’1” to 6’2” tall, and weighed approximately 160-180 pounds. His hair is described as curly and brown, and his beard is a light brown color. He also has brown eyes, was nearsighted and required contacts or glasses to drive. He was last seen wearing green wool army pants and wire-rimmed glasses, no description is given as to a shirt or coat but it can be assumed that he was wearing one.

Anybody with any information as to the whereabouts of John Daugherty should call the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office at (541) 474-5123 and reference case number S19880561

There is a forum over at Websleuths has maps of the general area in which John disappeared- perhaps if somebody who is more familiar with that area were to take a look at it, they'd be able to make sense of, perhaps, where his campsite was.
Like any missing person, John deserves the chance to go home to his family in some capacity.

Hey, that's my advocacy organization! We're still trying to determine the precise location of John's campsite so that the surrounding area can potentially be gone over with cadaver dogs. Also, if anyone manages to dig up a photograph of him, I'd like to add it to his entry on the still-being-created JoCoMPP website.

I am not entirely sure if this is the correct John Daugherty, but it seems to be the one high school yearbook photo that I could find on Ancestry fitting both his name and general description.
