Michael Doherty was last seen in the area of Phyllis Lane around 1:30 am on Sunday.

His parents reported him missing after he didn't come home from a party.

He was wearing a blue shirt with a Nike symbol along with black pants and sneakers.

He is a white male, about 5 feet 10 inches tall with brown hair and blue eyes.

Police are urging residents to check outside their homes for Doherty, especially near any sheds or detached buildings on their property.

Police are using K-9 units and canoes in the search on Monday, which includes a "swampy area" near Phyllis Lane. State environmental police also joined the search Monday morning because their officers are trained in searching through woods and swamps.

The Duke Chronicle reports Doherty is a junior at the Pratt School of Engineering and a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. The president of the fraternity Doherty is a member of will be heading to Franklin.

Any reports on whether he had been drinking or not? Unless he was actually kidnapped (highly unlikely I believe) he has to be close I would think. I sadly don't see this ending well though

Doherty left the bash alone, and never made it back to his home nearly a mile away.

Police have been searching woods and marshes off of Oak Street extension. A Massachusetts State Police Air Wing helicopter was temporarily grounded Monday due to rainy weather, but it has since resumed its search. Other agencies, including state environmental police, have also joined in on trying to find the Franklin native.

Authorities are also using motorboats and K-9 dogs to find Doherty.

Friends of Doherty's said that police reportedly found Doherty's sneaker and shirt in the area they have been searching.

Duke University said in a statement that it would help police in their search as requested.

Every single person who even made the slightest appearance at the party, needs to be interviewed.

I have a list of 275 young men from US and Canada who went missing walking home alone from a bar or party. All of them could not have been done by the same person as some have gone missing the same days in different geographical locations. However, many have common threads- they were last seen with a taxi nearby (someone called a cab, someone saw a car do a u turn and slow down next to them). There is also drug dealer deaths or gang initiation theories and friends trying to cover up what they did. I don't know why Michael disappeared or how, but I hope the police do not treat this case as "another drunk kid going missing."

Doherty charged his cell phone a little bit before leaving the home. Police say his phone has shown no activity since then.

“He was coherent,” a friend said. “He was talking.”

A second shoe was found on the edge of a nearby golf course today.

A massive search is underway in Franklin, where police are braving rough terrain and wet weather.

According to his friends, Doherty left a party on Phyllis Lane by himself after denying several offers for a ride to his Catherine Avenue home about a mile away.

He left on foot in the middle of a rainstorm.

The party was a relatively small gathering of about 20 to 30 college students returning home for the summer. Although some at the party were under the influence, Doherty seemed coherent and able to find his way home.

Doherty is an intelligent college kid who always played by the rules. Doherty isn't the type to stay away from home on Mother’s Day.

Dozens of police officers and public safety personnel have been checking a wooded, marshy area that they believe Doherty may have traveled through to reach his home more quickly. Neighborhood locals say the marshy path has become overgrown over the years and is no longer passable.

Residents are asked to check their property and any outbuildings such as sheds or barns.

turning down a ride in the midst of a storm? Even if less than a mile, still strikes me a little odd. Wonder what his friends thought when he refused the ride, or how bad it was really raining.

how many in Boston or MA and closeby

Jay Bilas (Duke Alum and sports announcer) just tweeted about it. Had not heard about it here in NC before hand.

Perhaps it was something like people were leaving through the evening and offered to give him a lift and he turned them down as he wanted to stay? Then he left and the rain hadn't let up. The shoes being found so far apart and the shirt makes me feel like those items were ditched though...even in the worst storm I'd think you could make it home or to shelter relatively in one piece in that small area, not losing clothing as you go along. Unless we find out drugs are involved...this reminds me of Colin Gillis. Hopefully someone saw him on the road to verify he ever left.
