Smith was last seen on March 1, and her last known location was at Roadway Inn at 3801 N. Patterson Ave.

Family believes Mary Smith was killed by someone who might have also stolen her money.

The relatives said that Smith, 61, might not be alive because police haven’t determined if Smith has cashed her April Social Security disability check, and she hasn’t used any of her food stamps. Her sister has Smith's May check. “When her check comes, she is right there at the mailbox waiting for it,” her sister said. “It’s not like her not to call or pick up her money.”

They last saw Mary Smith after she had cashed her March disability check for nearly $600. They said that a male acquaintance of Smith drove her to Roadway Inn on March 1. After Smith was reported missing, her sister showed Smith’s picture to the employees at the motel. One employee indicated that Smith was last seen on the motel balcony with three men.

The motel has a different surveillance video system than it had when Smith was at the motel. Its current system doesn’t have video footage of when she was there on March 1. The motel manager asked the contractor for the hard drive of the previous system for a video of that day.

Police brought in large construction equipment to scour a lot in the 4100 block of North Patterson Avenue on Monday morning after family members of a missing woman found an item that may belong to her.

Family members recently found a backpack on a vacant lot at 4191 N. Patterson Ave. similar to one Smith carried. The lot is about a mile from the hotel.

This is a YT video, but it appears to be Winston Salem's official YT. This was posted October 3, 2017, so she is still missing as of then.

Winston-Salem police need help finding missing woman

For nearly two years the Winston-Salem Police Department has been investigating the disappearance of 63-year-old Mary Magdalene Smith.

[...]

Since Smith’s disappearance, police say they have followed eight leads and dozens of tips but they have lead nowhere.

“So, we wanted to put this information out again just in case during that time someone has seen, heard of, recognized, if they could get that information to us so we can do a follow-up on it,” Lt. AJ Santos said.

Investigators hope there is information out there that may help ease Smith’s family’s pain of not knowing what happened.

“At the end of the day it’s not necessarily a closing on our part as far as the investigation but again, for the family. For the Smith family,” Santos said.

Santos said they are not giving up. He said they have contacted Smith’s family at least 48 times since her disappearance and will continue to do so every 10 days.

When Smith disappeared in 2017, her family said Winston-Salem police questioned more than 130 people who were staying at the motel where she was headed.

Since then, the family said they haven't heard much from the police.

Faye said she and her aunt Mary were very close.

[...]

That's until Mary left Doris's home to go back to her motel on February 28, 2017.

“My daughter told me she had six $100 bills on her and Faye asked her to leave some of the money with me and she said no, so the man took her to the motel and she stayed up there,” Doris said. “ We didn't see her anymore.”

That summer, Faye thought she had found her aunt's backpack near the Roadway Inn off Patterson Avenue in Winston-Salem where Mary was staying.

It led WSPD to search eight acres surrounding the motel, but no luck, and since then Faye said they haven’t heard anything.
