no known connection to the family. What's the motive?

Sheesh. Here I am trying to rationalize an irrational act.

So sorry beautiful family...

Prosecutors to Hear Evidence Before Ruling on Death Penalty
Prosecutors said they will hear evidence from attorneys of a man charged with aggravated murder for a deadly blaze that killed seven people before deciding whether to pursue the death penalty against him.

Summit County prosecutors are making the criminal case against Stanley Ford, 58, part of a pilot program that allows defense attorneys to present evidence about why a defendant should not be sentenced to death before prosecutors seek death penalty specifications in a grand jury (...)

Interesting new approach, since mitigation typically occurs after the suspect is found guilty.

Stanley Ford, 59, of Akron, was indicted last July on 29 charges, including 22 counts of aggravated murder, and faces the death penalty. The murder charges involve different parts of the law under which he was charged.

Ford is being held in the Summit County Jail without bond.

Investigators say Ford set three fires in his neighborhood, with two people killed in one fire and seven — two adults and five children — perishing in the other. The third was a car fire without injuries.

Investigators say Ford set each of the fires because he had “a beef” with his neighbors.

Ford will have a hearing at 9:30 a.m. Friday in Summit County Common Pleas courtroom on his attorneys’ claim of racial bias.

During Friday’s hearing, the issue of whether Ford being handcuffed during pretrial proceedings could bias the jury also will be discussed.

Ford’s trial, originally set to begin with jury selection in early August, recently was delayed until after the first of the year. Jury selection is now scheduled to start Jan. 15, with the trial beginning Feb. 11. The trial is expected to last up to six weeks.

Stanley Ford’s attorneys contend the 59-year-old Akron man shouldn’t be facing a potential death penalty. They argue the U.S. Supreme Court has prohibited the execution of people who are intellectually disabled.

Jury selection was set to start this Tuesday, but the judge postponed trial, likely for months, to give the lawyers involved time to consult experts on questions about Ford’s mental condition.

Brain damage claim delays trial in fires that killed nine

A month after a Summit County judge ordered a competency evaluation of an Akron man accused of setting two fatal fires, he has finally been transferred to a mental hospital in Columbus.

Nothing else will happen in Stanley Ford’s case until his evaluation is completed, court officials said.

That means that jury selection in Ford’s capital murder trial, originally set to start Tuesday, will be delayed.

A psychiatrist says a man facing aggravated murder charges for nine deaths in two Ohio arson fires is competent to stand trial.

Sixty-year-old Stanley Ford could be sentenced to death if convicted of killing two adults in 2016 and two adults and five children in 2017. Both fires were set near Ford's Akron home.

The judge said she would decide about Ford's competency in the next 60 to 90 days and told attorneys to prepare for a trial in January.

When potential jurors report for duty for an Akron man’s capital murder trial Monday, they won’t go to the Summit County Courthouse.

Instead, they’ll head to the Akron-Summit County Public Library.

The first part of jury selection for Stanley Ford’s trial for nine arson deaths will be in the library’s auditorium. This will allow the dozens of possible jurors to socially distance as they fill out a questionnaire and schedule individual interviews.

The pandemic is continuing to provide extra challenges for Ford’s trial.

Openings were very interesting, state has got lots of maps, CCTV and good technical visuals so should be interesting. 4 weeks is what the judge says it will last. Also a good idea to take the jury to the crime scene so they could have an idea of where all the crime scenes were in relation to the defendants home.
