Montana Republican Greg Gianforte, Charged With Assault, Awaits Fate in Vote

The Republican candidate in a hotly contested special House election in Montana was charged with assaulting a journalist on Wednesday at what was to be a final rally in Bozeman on the eve of the vote. The attack brought police officers to the event and sent the reporter to the hospital for X-rays.

In a statement late on Wednesday, the office of the Gallatin County sheriff, Brian Gootkin, said that there was enough evidence to charge the candidate, Greg Gianforte, with misdemeanor assault. Mr. Gianforte, the Republican candidate for the states lone House seat, is scheduled to appear in court before June 7.

A number of commentators have noted that not only did the assault not weaken support for Gianforte, it likely strengthened it, at least among his core Republican backers, some of whom were heard advocating for further attacks upon reporters working for the "East Coast liberal elite." Pretty repellant, IMO.

I laugh at the fact the journalist was asking about healthcare and how it was reported 23 million will lose coverage. I am pretty sure a lot of Montana would be affected. But instead of focusing on facts and critical thinking let's lash out, lie and avoid the tough questions.
