Thirty-one-year-old Gray Davis, a dancer with the American Ballet Theater, says no one was acting to help the unidentified man who had fallen onto the subway tracks Saturday night. Davis tells The New York Times that he jumped onto the tracks and lifted the unconscious man onto the platform, before swinging himself up using his ballet training.

American Ballet Theater dancer Gray Davis was returning home from watching his wife Cassandra Trenary perform as the title character in The Golden Cockerel at the Metropolitan Opera.

He was on the platform of 72 Street Broadway with his wife when they saw a man falling onto the tracks and looked for help. “At first I waited for somebody else to jump down there,” Davis told The New York Times. “People were screaming to get help. But nobody jumped down. So I jumped down.”

Davis lifted up the man, who was unconscious, to the platform, helped by other people. Hearing the rumble of a train approaching, Davis then had to get himself away from danger. “I never realized how high it was,” he said. “Luckily, I’m a ballet dancer, so I swung my leg up.”

Thank God Davis was there and he was able to use his ballet training to help the man. Certainly not an easy thing to lift a person to safety with a herniated disc--very painful!

I wish they would install barriers in the subways to keep people from being pushed/falling onto the tracks. They could have turnstiles, or gates that can opened after the train comes to a stop. MOO

Thank God for a good person like him. He is a hero.
