[h=1]Family offers $5,000 reward for info leading to missing Volusia man[/h]
Out-of-town family members of a missing southeast Volusia County man are helping search for him and are offering $5,000 for information leading to his location.

Stephen Paoletti, a 44-year-old private investigator, was reported missing June 3 by a friend who said she last heard from him about four days before, according to a Volusia County Sheriff’s Office report.

A deputy went to Paoletti’s residence, a camper in the back of a property on Hideaway Lane near Edgewater on June 3. The deputy spoke to Paoletti’s landlord Nora Galbreath who said she last saw him the night before. Galbreath said Paoletti was riding in a pickup but she did not know who he was with, a report states.

[h=1]Deputies search for missing former officer, private investigator[/h]
EDGEWATER, Fla. - The Volusia County Sheriff Office is searching for a former police officer and current private investigator that had problems with his landlord before his disappearance.

Deputies said a friend of Stephen "Steve" Paoletti’s called them to report him missing. The friend told them that she speaks with Paoletti on a daily basis and on May 30 the communication between them ceased.
Paoletti had posted a Craigslist ad to barter his service in lieu of paying rent.

He started working for an Edgewater woman eight months prior, but law enforcement was called the place where he resides on May 24.
Paoletti was staying in a barn in a home of Hideaway Lane in Edgewater, however, after Hurricane Matthew, he had to move into the landlord’s home. After the storms, there was an incident between Paoletti and his landlord, and deputies were called the to property, according to the report.

Still missing. Perhaps he's undercover on an extended mission.

I'm not a mod, but we are not allowed to discuss comments made on articles or social media. Anyone can post things on news articles. Those comments are considered rumors. You can say "interesting comment on this article" to point it out to us but that is about all you can say. If you think a comment is true and you want to discuss it here then send it to a reporter and ask them to look into it. Sometimes they do put it in a story and then we can discuss what the media reports on.

I found a copy of the police report. I will not post as it contains the name of his landlord, who has been cleared. But if you Google his first and last name you can find it on the document cloud website link that shows up for your personal reading as one of the first few "hits" on his name.

Details of Disappearance
Paoletti was last seen in Edgewater, Florida on May 29, 2017, and he had contact with his girlfriend by text message on May 30. They had plans to meet at her home for a Memorial Day cookout, and Paoletti said he'd bring a watermelon. He texted that he was having car trouble, but sent another text a short time later saying he'd taken care of it.

He never showed up at his girlfriend's house that night and never called, texted or emailed her, which is uncharacteristic of his behavior. He has never been heard from again. His girlfriend reported him missing four days later.

At the time of his disappearance, Paoletti worked freelance security jobs and also as a private investigator, specializing in judgment collections. He lived in a camper on a small farm the 1700 block of Hideaway Lane in Edgewater, but was in the process of moving out after getting into a tenant dispute with his landlord, who lived in the farmhouse.

When police went to his residence, they found his car parked there, with the hood up and a battery charger attached. His cellular phones were inside his camper, and there was no evidence of a struggle. His landlord said she'd seen Paoletti on June 2, riding in a dark-colored pickup truck. Police have ruled her out as a suspect in her disappearance, as she's elderly and in poor health.

In addition to his dispute with his landlord, Paoletti has had some legal issues. Two local people, one of them a court clerk, had filed injunctions against him, allegeding he was stalking them. Both of the injunctions were later dismissed. His girlfriend thought he might have been armed, but neither she nor his parents, who live in New York, thought he was a danger to himself or anyone else.

Authorities stated there was very little evidence as to Paoletti's fate. His father believes if he was attacked at home, it couldn't have been a random act; he stated Paoletti's trailer was in an out-of-the-way area that wasn't easy to reach, and it was unlikely anyone would have accidentally come upon it.

His case remains unsolved.

His family held a memorial service for him last August:

Obituary for Stephen Anthony Paoletti at Pietszak Funeral Home

Interesting they held a memorial after only three years. I wonder if the family were tipped off to his fate?

It sounds like he was in the middle of jumpstarting his vehicle when something happened. Based on the few details available, I see three theories:
  • Someone connected to the landlady. There was a dispute between them.
  • Someone connected to his PI work. He had several injunctions against him.
  • A random abduction (very unlikely).
