Trial information:

The trial of a Blairmore man accused of three murders is underway in Lethbridge.
Derek Saretzky entered “not guilty” pleas for three counts of murder in relation to the deaths of Terry Blanchette, his daughter, two-year-old Hailey Dunbar-Blanchette, and Hanne Meketech.

I found the lack of information in the Crown's opening statement a bit puzzling - basically just that he confessed. Unless I missed something. No mention of motive or what he actually did. I guess after hearing the Crown's opening in the Garland trial I expected more. I'm sure they have a strategy, but what that is is unclear at this point.

Bizarre and disturbing things (well, the entire thing is disturbing obviously):

1. The note on the fridge w. crossed out names of the victims - and why was Chy on there? Crossed off because he got her by murdering her child?
2. The pot at the fire pit with Hailey's blood (WTF - does this tie into cannibalism?)
3. The measuring cup with Saretzky's blood - was he experimenting with drinking his own blood?
4. "The hideous baby" - extremely disturbing. Anger that the woman he was infatuated with had a child with another man, and he resented the child?
5. I know "everyone reacts differently" to tragedy - and I mean absolutely no disrespect - but I was very puzzled by Cheyenne Dunbar's tearless interview with the media. Probably totally irrelevant, but it really stuck out to me.

These are all just my musings, nothing more.

Perhaps they expected testimony/cross examination to take longer.

But also, (as tweeted by Rob Fletcher on Friday, "Crown says a light day is in order for the jury after grisly evidence of Day 2"), I think they are allowing the jury lots of breaks to absorb and process what they've heard - in this case the testimony of a man who found his son murdered and his grandchild missing - before they introduce another intense witness, Dereks father. The judge said that counselling was available, this would give time for any jurors who want to, to talk to a counsellor and then take the night to recover. Jurors have sued for post-traumatic stress disorder and one committed suicide, this is a new issue to manage during trials.

It was another short day in the triple homicide trial of 24-year old Derek Saretzky, with the Crown presenting all their evidence for Monday (June 12) before lunch.

Saretzky faces three counts of first degree murder for the September 2015 deaths of 69-year old Hanne Meketech, 27-year old Terry Blanchette and his two-year old daughter, Hailey Dunbar-Blanchette.
Terry’s father and Hailey’s grandfather, William Blanchette, took the stand Monday, to discuss the day he found his son’s body.
Blanchette started by explaining that on Sept. 13, 2015, he babysat Hailey while Terry worked – something he had done numerous times before. He also noted that Terry and Cheyenne Dunbar – Hailey’s mother – alternated custody every two weeks. At the time, Terry had Hailey for a five-week period, as Cheyenne was moving.

I should have been more specific - sorry about that. On DS's notebook page submitted as evidence (it was on the last thread) you can see some of the words Dereck wrote on the back page coming through. I actually read others trying to decipher it on an article and they had the "Mass" part. I don't see him going to church on a daily basis or any church having services as much as he seems to make notes about it.
