GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) A local pastor out of Grand Junction has been reported as missing.

Pastor Paris Wallace is his name. He went down to Espanola, New Mexico for a meeting.

He's the lead pastor at Connection Church in Grand Junction.

His wife reported him as missing Wednesday night at 5:00 after not hearing from him.

This is our official update statement regarding Paris Wallace.
We are asking that you share this post only, and refrain from other posts and comments, as we want to make sure all information is correct. Thank you for your help and understanding.

New Mexico Search and Rescue has approximately 40 people in teams of eight people with search dogs. They are also utilizing aerial search equipped with high-resolution cameras.

Approximately 1.5 miles uphill from where Paris’ vehicle was found, NM Search and Rescue found a backpack belonging to Paris.

Please continue to pray for Paris, his family, and the NM Search and Rescue team.

Uh oh it's 98 in Espanola right now. If he's lost I hope he found a place to lay low until it cools down.

I do love New Mexico but there are a range of tough environments within her borders.

This article states his backpack was found downstream in the Rio Grande River, and a rope stretching across the Rio Pueblo, which is a tributary of the Rio Grande, is also believed to belong to him.

It has been very hot the last few days in this part of the state. It was 100 in Albuquerque today. I hope this man has survived. If he's near the river so he can get water, and isn't fatally injured, he may have a chance. The terrain can be unforgiving here, and it can be deceptive, not looking as dangerous as it can actually be. It's very easy to slide and for rocks and soil to give way. There are lots of sharp rocks and steep, sudden declines in addition to the heat, and I hear the rattlesnakes are pretty bad already due to the increased rains over the last couple of seasons.

Very, very bad scenario here.

Also ... just how many people have died while looking for this "hidden treasure"? If the reader has to cross dangerous rivers, scale canyons, and risk life and limb, at what point should the author go get the treasure himself and divide it among the families of those who perished in pursuit of it?

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) - Authorities say a pastor from Grand Junction who has been reported missing in New Mexico was searching for a famous hidden treasure, the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reports.

The newspaper says that New Mexico State Police Lt. Elizabeth Armijo confirmed family members told authorities that Paris Wallace had come to the Española area to search for a chest of gold rumored to be hidden in the mountains.

The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel says the rough terrain around Española is the southernmost territory targeted by adventurous individuals seeking the treasure of Forrest Fenn.

Police in northern New Mexico say they've recovered the body of a Colorado pastor who disappeared last week while searching for buried treasure.
The fortune, hidden somewhere in the Rocky Mountains, has lured many treasure hunters. And Paris Wallace, of Grand Junction, may be the second person to die in the search.

This is fascinating! The guy who hid the treasure has already said he was 80 when he hid it and people shouldn't put themselves at risk to find it. Sad that two people have died for the cause. Here is the thread for the other chap, Randy Bilyeu, who died last year:

Paris Wallace, 52, was reported missing a week ago after he travelled to the Rocky Mountains near Santa Fe seeking a bronze chest of gold and jewels.

Forrest Fenn, a millionaire antiques dealer, hid the chest in 2010 and wrote a poem he claimed led to the treasure.
