Court date set for former Vanderbilt football player charged in rape case

A status hearing was held Friday morning for two of the four former football players involved in the Vanderbilt rape case.

Brandon Banks and Jaborian McKenzie were both allegedly involved in the sexual assault of a female student in a dorm room in the summer of 2013.

Banks' trial is scheduled to begin on June 19.

It's not clear when the next hearing will be held for McKenzie. He waived his right to appear in court on Friday morning.

It took just about six hours on Thursday for lawyers to pick the 16 people [four of which will be deemed alternates] that will hear next week's trial of a former Vanderbilt University football player charged with aggravated rape.

On trial is Brandon E. Banks, 23, who is charged with five counts of aggravated rape and two counts of aggravated sexual battery. Prosecutors say Banks and three other former Vanderbilt football players raped an unconscious woman in a dorm room on June 23, 2013.

The 16 chosen jurors will return to court Monday to begin Banks' trial, which is expected to last one week. They will be sequestered, meaning they will stay overnight in a Nashville hotel, be kept under close watch and have to turn in their cellphones during trial.

Brandon Banks, who was a wide receiver, faces six felony charges in the rape and assault of an unconscious female student that happened at an on-campus dorm room on June 22, 2013.

Banks’ defense team told the jury the trial is going to be difficult and they are going to see things that are very unsettling.

Attorney: Student was bullied into role in Vanderbilt dormitory rape

A defense attorney said Monday an ex-Vanderbilt football player charged with raping an unconscious female student in a dorm room in 2013 was pressured and bullied into participating.

In opening statements, attorney Katie Hagan said trial jurors must determine if Brandon Banks was acting under duress.

Assistant District Attorney Jan Norman said Monday that a video shows Banks assaulted the student with a water bottle. She said Banks' cellphone contained 23 of 41 photos of the assault.


Former roommate gives graphic, damaging testimony on Day 2 of Vanderbilt trial

Tuesday was a day of damaging testimony as Brandon Banks former roommate testified against him in the Vanderbilt rape trial.

Jaborian "Tip" McKenzie described taking photographs as Banks and two other men sexually assaulted an unconscious woman on a Vanderbilt dorm room floor.

I was going to ask if the victim was going to testify and this answered my question. I feel sorry for her that they had to separate the trials and she has to keep testifying.

Wednesday was a day of emotional testimony as a former Vanderbilt football player and the woman he's accused of raping both took the stand.

Prosecutors have rested their case in for the third defendant, Brandon Banks. He's one of four former Vanderbilt football players accused of raping an unconscious female student in a dorm room.

Speaking in his own defense, Brandon Banks explained why he stayed in the dorm room the as unconscious woman was sexually assaulted.

A jury of 12 has begun deliberating the case against Brandon E. Banks, a former Vanderbilt University football player charged with raping an unconscious woman four years ago Friday.

The jurors began deliberations about 2:35 p.m. Thursday after hearing four days of testimony, including from Banks himself.
