Investigation into dead body discovered in Honesdale B&B focuses on daughter

June 26, 2017

The daughter of a dead woman whose body decomposed for “weeks or months” in a Honesdale bed and breakfast asked to move into a new room three or four months ago, according to a state police search warrant application.

Moira Richey, 51, told Harvest Inn Bed & Breakfast owner Anthony McHugh that she wanted a new room because her mother, Patricia Richey, 80, kept their third-floor room too warm.

State police suspect she might have had a different motive for moving.
 
"We opened the door and there was something in bed covered and that's all we saw, and there was no smell," the owner said.

Richey and her daughter Moira didn't pay rent but stayed on the third floor. The owners last saw Patricia Richey last Fall, then Moira Richey moved to another room after having trouble breathing in her mother's room. That was in February or March of this year. "She would not let me into the mother's room," the owner recalled.

Moira Richey was seen walking away from the inn Monday morning. She was an officer with NYPD but the department couldn't say why she left or when.

The owners of the Harvest Inn say Patricia Richey was not in good health at any point while she lived there.

How does a dead body not stink???? I am a farm owner, and believe me when I say dead mouse in my office ran off everyone even me. I have trail rode on horses and a mile away from a dead cow we could smell it. So how on earth does a dead human not smell a mile away?????????????????????????????????????
 
My thoughts exactly! I vaguely remember seeing lye had been spread on roadkill until my dad (a part time PA State Game Warden) was able to get them and complete the process. If I recall, it did dampen the smell. Conversely, there was a horse that had died on a farm about a half a mile from my aunt and uncle's place in SE PA but because they were up above the area (very curvy and hilly but still only a half a mile, 3/4 at the absolute tops) we could smell nothing. Like acoustic shadows but with smell. But I agree, in this case it is a puzzler. :thinking:

How could a decomposing body not smell at some point in this horrible ordeal? There is an appalling lack of curiosity among all those who lived at that B&B!!

So where's the daughter? Wasn't she the mothers caretaker? Didn't she have a responsibility to call 911 when the mother fell ill? Was she hiding the body all this time to keep cashing her mothers Social Security checks ? And if they did not insist on finally entering the room it would've gone on for who knows how long years? she denied her mother medical care and then hid her body for God knows how long and probably without spending her money. So where is she has she been arrested yet or what?
