Circumstances of Disappearance
Schmidt was last seen in Lincoln, Nebraska on September 5, 1995. She went to the Nebraska State Fair. She hung out at a friend's house. She hopped on an old Schwinn and pedaled home from her friend's place to the apartment she shared with her mother and a younger sister in a big green house on the corner of 12th and D streets. She leaned the bike against a whitewashed pillar, locked it up and dropped her purse and shoes inside the door of the apartment building. And then she disappeared.
When Melissas's mother got home that night, she saw Missy's bike. She saw, inside the door to the apartment house, her daughter's purse and shoes, a bag of clothes from the night before, which Missy had spent with a friend, and a novel by her daughter's favorite author, Stephen King. She assumed Missy was asleep. The next morning, she got up about 5 to wake Missy for school and the long bus ride to East High, which Missy attended because she had been living with her stepfather in that part of town before moving in with her mother. And the 15-year-old girl's bed was empty. The mother called the school. She called Missy's friends. And she called police. Missy's mother is sure her daughter didn't run away that night.

Solving Missing Persons Cases

Lincoln
Updated: 6:50 PM Jul 26, 2006
Kelly Jordan

Hope hasn't faded for Sherry Schmidt. Her daughter Melissa went missing in September of 1995. She says it's hard to handle the uncertainty.

"Not knowing, not knowing what happened to her not knowing if she's okay missing all these years," said Sherry Schmidt of Lincoln.

Melissa is on a list with more than 300 other missing Nebraskans.

The Legislature helped establish the Missing Persons Clearinghouse to get the word out about missing Nebraskans. Kelly Jolkowski's son Jason disappeared in 2001. She says the Clearinghouse website can make a difference.

"Working together we can accomplish this goal to bring them home," said Kelly Jolkowski.

The website, which can be accessed through the Nebraska State Patrol site, includes information on the missing. The Governor says, more people need to check out the site.

"We need your help to raise the awareness of the website and the good it can do. Our investigators cannot solve these cases without input from their eyes and ears in the field, ordinary Nebraskans," said Governor Dave Heineman.

Elizabeth Schmidt agrees, she was only 11-years old when her sister, Melissa went missing. She says more awareness is a long time coming. Especially when it comes to solving Melissa's case.

"If you have a heart you're going to check out a missing child and atleast try to remember their face, or feel something for that family," said Elizabeth Schmidt.

Lincoln police have identified the human remains found in a ditch southwest of the Capitol City, and they believe they have solved a 12-year-old murder case.

On Friday, investigators said the body is that of Melissa Schmidt-Maser, 15, who disappeared in 1995.

. . . Four days after Schmidt-Maser's body was discovered, police began to search for a vehicle of interest. It was a car that appeared to match the one previously owned by a man in prison for murder.
Police are looking for a gray 1979 Chrysler Newport.
Police said Todd Baker, 43, previously owned a car matching that description. He was convicted of murder in December. . . .

Some background on the individual who may turn out to be a POI:
. . .Ten years after 38-year-old Anne True's body was found in a field, Todd Baker has been convicted of killing her . . .

. . . and Baker, who lived in Lincoln until the late 1990s. . .
. . .Hecox testified that sometime during the summer of 1996, Baker jumped out of his car, grabbed True, hit her with a hammer and dumped her body in a field. . . .

I'm glad Melissa's family has some resolution but I sure wish it had been better news.

Melissa Ann Schmidt

Melissa Ann Schmidt was last seen in Lincoln, Nebraska on September 5, 1995. She had gone to the Nebraska State Fair that day, then rode her bike home. She made it home, locked up her bike and dropped her bag, shoes and a book that she had been reading inside the door. She was never seen alive again. Melissa's remains were located near Denton, Nebraska on January 26, 2007 after a tip to authorities. DNA confirmed her identification in March 2007.

I think they need to be looking at Todd Baker as a possible serial killer and not just someone who killed only twice. His random kill method sounds like an offhand thing that would likely be repeated more than just two times.

I totally agree doc! I personally knew Todd Baker & even worked w/him for a short time. And I have told people, "how do we know that Melissa was his first or that Anne was his last?!!"
I'm sure he was also a stalker & looked for easy victims!

You may have to register. It didn't seem like the local paper cared too much about the Todd Baker issue. And have found some of the articles have disappeared? Could have had something to do w/the fact he was a CI for awhile?
But, I honestly feel that he had me marked as one of his victims. Scarey!

Finally - they got this creepy sick man...

"Missy disappeared in September 1995, and there was no trace of her until this March, when police identified her from remains they found in a ditch west of Lincoln in January.

Authorities said they had a suspect in Missy’s death but didn’t publically identify him until Monday, when prosecutors charged Todd Baker — convicted in September 2006 in another slaying — with first-degree murder.

In an unusual move, Baker was charged, pleaded guilty and was sentenced at the same hearing in Lancaster County District Court."

York News Times actually covered something on this (this time.)

You will need to register.
Also an interview w/N.C. on Baker.
Officer Cobb involved with investigation and confession:

Listen to the audio from the interview!

And I still believe there are more victims. A monster doesn't stop at two. Every one is questioning a possible involvement with Gina Bos now.
