On Wednesday, Fremont County Coroner Randy Keller conducted a press conference to give limited details about the man who was found by a hiker in the west part of Fremont County on Sept. 28, 2016.
Keller said the skeletal remains found were positively identified to be human, and they were able to determine he was a white male and is 5 feet 4 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall.

They've also narrowed down the man's age to be between the ages of 17 to 30 years old; although Keller thinks he would be in his early 20s.

Keller said they also were able to determine a surgical repair on the man's left ankle, where they found two pins still existing.

Keller also explained that facial reconstruction isn't completely accurate. He said the man's facial features are accurate, but facial area or hair on top of a person's head is inaccurate when a reconstruction is done.

The skeletal remains of a man found last fall in western Fremont County likely had been there for two to four years, or even longer, the county coroner said.

Fremont County coroner Randy Keller said a facial-reconstruction model was completed by a specialist in Denver in hopes of finding the next of kin for the man, described as a white male who was 5 feet 4 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall and likely in his early 20s. Investigators found a surgical repair to the man’s left ankle, where they found two pins still existing.

Arrest Made in Fremont County Cold Case

Detectives from the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office have made an arrest in a 2007 cold case.
On January 24th, 2019 Fremont County Sheriff’s Office Detectives arrested 37 year old Jeffery Brian Smith of Goodyear, Arizona for the murder of Remzi Nesfield. Nesfield’s skeletal remains were discovered by a hiker in a remote area of western Fremont County in September of 2016. A forensic examination of the remains by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office revealed Nesfield’s death was caused by a gunshot wound to the head. The remains were sent to the Human Identification Laboratory in Denver, Colorado for a forensic analysis. The results of this examination were received by the Fremont County Coroner’s Office in December of 2017 and the remains were identified as Remsey Nesfield who had been reported missing in 2007. Smith is being held at the Maricopa County Jail on a no bond hold pending extradition.

Cold case homicide suspect restored to competency

Fremont County District Court Judge Ramsey Lama said Monday an updated evaluation ruled Smith is now competent, which means he is capable of assisting his attorney with his defense. However, Public Defender Jason Kosloski argued the evaluation was not sufficient and should be done again because testing and imaging should have been conducted to determine if a potential brain injury affects Smith’s competency.

Lama said he did not find the evaluation was insufficient. Kosloski then requested a second evaluation for Smith to be conducted by an independent evaluator.

Lama granted that request.
