Missing men,
51 Division,
Selim Esen, 44,
Andrew Kinsman, 44

Friday, July 28, 2017

Officers from 51 Division are continuing their investigation into the disappearance of two men from the Church Street and Wellesley Street area.

Selim Esen, 44, was last seen on Friday, April 14, 2017, in the Bloor Street and Yonge Street area.

He is quite familiar with the Church Street and Wellesley Street area, and frequents the Ted Rogers Way area.

He is described as 5’10”, 150 lbs., brown eyes, brown hair, full beard. He was often in possession of a silver suitcase with wheels, a photograph of which is attached.

Andrew Kinsman, 49, was last seen on Monday, June, 26, 2017, near 71 Winchester Street.

There has been some suggestion, within the Church/Wellesley community, that the disappearances of Andrew Kinsman and Selim Esen are linked as well as with three other men reported missing from the same area from 2010 to 2012. Detailed investigation and evidence obtained, thus far, in the course of both investigations, has not confirmed a link although, as part of the police investigation, this is being considered. The disappearance of both men is considered suspicious. It is out of character for both, as is the absence of communication with people they were habitually in contact with.

A dedicated team is in the process of being established to allow officers assigned to these investigations to concentrate solely on the disappearance of these two men.

“There has been some suggestion, within the Church/Wellesley community, that the disappearances of Andrew Kinsman and Selim Esen are linked as well as with three other men reported missing from the same area from 2010 to 2012,” Toronto police wrote in a news release Friday.

“Detailed investigation and evidence obtained, thus far, in the course of both investigations, has not confirmed a link although, as part of the police investigation, this is being considered.”

Despite this, police say both disappearances are being considered suspicious.

“It is out of character for both, as is the absence of communication with people they were habitually in contact with,” police said in the release.
In the case of Selim Esen, police say he’s known to frequent the Ted Rogers Way area and is familiar with the Church and Wellesley neighbourhood.

He is described as standing five-foot-ten, weighing about 150 pounds with brown eyes, brown hair and a full beard.

Esen was often in possession of a silver suitcase on wheels.

Police say both men were active on social media dating applications.

Anyone with new information is being asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.

OK so why are we only finding out about Selim Esan now? He was last seen in April. I saw this story on the news this morning and have to wonder WTH is going on? Is Selim gay? Does he work? If so, were his employers worried? Who reported him missing?

I notice that both men have beards, are somewhat dark and hairy. Could be a preference for some perp.

Also, where does Selim live? The bulletin tells us he is familiar with the Church and Wellesley area and frequents the Ted Rogers Way area. So that's Jarvis North. Frequents Ted Rogers Way? What does that mean? That he travels through that way? Does he go to Sherbourne Station that way? Does he live in the apartments over there?

I'm trying to find his social media. There are many men with the same name. I'm guessing he is Turkish.

Although the cases are not verified at this time to be connected, all the men missing from that area in the last number of years, seem to be bearded, imo, speculation.

So Friday, April 14th was Good Friday and many places would have been closed.

I wonder if TPS had the original date wrong on their bulletin from May? This would make people think back to the wrong date.

Andrew Kinsman, 49, was last seen June 26, and Selim Esen, 44, was last seen April 14.

Police are treating both cases as suspicious and say their disappearances are out of character.

There’s currently no evidence that the cases are connected or that foul play was involved, police said. However, officers will be running “parallel investigations” so that they can share information. Officers assigned to these investigations will be taken off their other caseloads.

“It allows the investigators to dedicate their time and resources to solving these cases,” said police spokesperson Meaghan Gray, who said they “can’t exclude the possibility” the cases might be connected.

Gray said officers are also working with a homicide investigator to review information.

Three men linked to the Church and Wellesley community were also reported missing between 2010 and 2012, and never found. Police said they haven’t found a connection to these older cases, but are not ruling out that possibility.

While one disappearance has gripped the community in recent weeks, the second case has flown under the radar until today.

The two cases bear a striking resemblance to a similar string of disappearances, from 2010 to 2012, where three men vanished from the village without a trace. The similarities have put Toronto’s gay community on edge.

When Kinsman was last seen, he had come off another Pride weekend. He bumped into two married friends on the way back from the Church Street village, they swapped small talk and promised to get together soon. The next day, Monday, he returned a set of keys to his neighbour they had forgotten in the mailbox lock.
The last time Selim Esen was seen in public, it was Good Friday. While police are now openly connecting his disappearance with Kinsman’s, there is little detail regarding the final days before he disappeared, last spring.
Police are not exactly forthcoming on his situation. A press release reads that Esen is “quite familiar with the Church Street and Wellesley Street area,” the main drag in the village. It adds that he is frequently seen with a silver suitcase. Beyond that, a police spokesperson said simply ” There is no new information on this case.”
Between 2010 and 2012, three men went missing from the village. All three were in their 40s or early 50s, all three were Arab or East Asian, all three frequented the same haunts on Church Street.

VICE News investigated those disappearances throughout the last year, uncovering evidence that suggests one of the men went missing from a secluded park in the city’s north end — a location not investigated by police.

There are reasons to suspect that the cases are merely an eerie coincidence. Kinsman is white, meaning he doesn’t quite fit the profile established by the first three men to disappear.

Yet there are similarities. Esen fits the profile to a T. Of the five cases, all are of similar age, build, and all have facial hair.

Even more strangely, a hypothesis floated by an internet sleuth on an online message board some four years ago also rings true: All of the disappearances have been around holiday weekends. Kinsman, over Pride. Esen, over Easter. The previous three cases: Labour Day, Christmas, Thanksgiving.

The creation of a dedicated task force would only intensify the investigation.

On a personal level, Richmond says, he has never worked at a detachment with as much LGBTQ representation as 51 Division. His team has published frequent updates, bluntly worded, directly addressed to the community.

Great work Justin Ling! I think he was on here at some point. I forget which case, maybe Magnotta but not sure.

LGBT community hopes for answers from police team tasked with finding missing men

Meeting Tuesday night between community, police, family of missing man in Church and Wellesley area
The organizer of a community meeting that's expected to draw up to 200 people is hoping that Tuesday evening's gathering is a chance to dispel misinformation and allay fears over the recent disappearances of two men from the heart of Toronto's gay community.

Andrew Kinsman, 49, and Selim Esen, 44, were both known to hang out in the Church and Wellesley area and were both active on internet dating apps, according to police
On Tuesday evening, a meeting at the 519 Community Centre, located at 519 Church St., will give the public a chance to question members of the recently announced team of police officers who are investigating the disappearances full time.

Just in case this forum is considered included in this bit about "quick" suggestions, from above CBC linked article.. Initial suggestion that the earlier missing men, 2010-12 reports may be connected came from LE.

Meanwhile, commenters on amateur sleuthing forums have been quick to suggest connections between the cases, noting that all five of the men are dark-haired, middle-aged and bearded.

Statement on the Cases of Andrew Kinsman and Selim Esen

The disappearance of Andrew Kinsman and Selim Esen is worrying and I share in the community's ongoing concern for their wellbeing. Each of these men are friends and family to many and we are all praying for their safe return.

I was pleased to hear from Toronto ‎Police on Friday that there are dedicated officers working to solve the cases of Andrew Kinsman and Selim Esen. While no evidence has yet been found to connect any missing persons cases from the Village over the last seven years, members of the community are concerned and are looking for answers. These dedicated resources provide some assurance that the necessary work is being done
The most important thing we can do for Andrew and Selim, at this time, is make sure that the Police have all of the information they need to advance their investigations. Anyone with information regarding either Andrew Kinsman or Selim Esen is strongly encouraged to contact the police (416-808-5100) or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers (416-222-8477).
