FBI investigating explosion at Minnesota mosque

An explosion shook a Minneapolis-area mosque during morning prayers Saturday, and an FBI official said it was caused by an “improvised explosive device.”

Rick Thornton, the FBI’s special agent in charge of the investigation, told reporters Saturday afternoon that the blast was caused by an “improvised explosive device” but offered no further details about its composition or possible suspects. Neither the FBI nor the Bloomington Police Department, which initially responded to the explosion, speculated on a motive for the incident.

“At this point, our focus is to determine who and why,” Thornton said at a news conference. “Is it a hate crime? Is it an act of terror?…Again, that’s what the investigation is going to determine.”

FBI: Islamic Center blast caused by improvised explosive device

Shortly after 5 a.m. Saturday, Bloomington police responded to a call of an explosion at the Dar Al-Farooq Islamic Center near Interstate Hwy. 494 and Portland Avenue South.

By late Saturday afternoon, the FBI said the preliminary investigation indicated the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device, but would not characterize the device further. They said their focus was to determine the "who and why" behind the incident.

Oh no. Why do people do this? Such evil, it's disgusting.

And honestly, what's going on in the Minneapolis area as of late?

No kidding! Minnesota has always been such a top state in education, employment, number of Fortune 500 companies, green space, safety.

Suspected hate crime? We shall see. If it turns out to be such, I'd prefer it be called by its proper name, which is domestic terrorism.

Governor declares hate crime per NYT

and travelers are warned to stay out of Missouri....

That's really just a boycott because the NAACP is upset over a bill that was passed. They have good reason to disllike the bill, but it has nothing to do with the state being an unsafe place for blacks to travel. Kind of disappointed at the Missouri NAACP for this, it's kind of dishonest.

Just sayin'.

Attack on Minnesota Mosque ‘an Act of Terrorism,’ Governor Says

by Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS — The Dar Al-Farooq Islamic Center in suburban Minneapolis, like other U.S. mosques, occasionally receives threatening calls and emails. Its leaders say they're more frightened now after an explosive shattered windows and damaged a room as worshippers prepared for morning prayers.

"We feel like it's much deeper and scarier than like something random," Mohamed Omar, the center's executive director, said Sunday. "It's so scary."

No one was hurt in the blast, which happened around 5 a.m. Saturday. Windows of the imam's office were shattered, either by what the FBI called an "improvised explosive device" or by an object thrown through them. The FBI is seeking suspects and trying to determine whether the incident was a hate crime.

Gov. Mark Dayton joined other public officials and community leaders for a meeting inside the building Sunday, describing the bombing as "so wretched" and "not Minnesota." ...

"This is an act of terrorism. This is against the law in America," Dayton said at a news conference afterward, the Star Tribune reported.

I'm not surprised by this. People feel emboldened in their hate.

Did we find out who did it?

No. I haven't found that there have been any arrests. Most of MSM is just political commentary, which doesn't belong on this thread. There has been an outpouring of support from the community:

More than $84,000 raised after Minnesota mosque bombing

Mohamed Omar, the mosque's director, said his community was grateful for those who have sent money and messages and visited the centre after the attack.

While the bombing was "horrific and tragic", Omar told the Associated Press, "on the other hand, good people came out, and they outnumber that one bad guy, and we are so pleased and so happy to see this community coming together in our support".

Hundreds Gather to Show Solidarity at Fire-bombed Minnesota Mosque

In a show of solidarity, hundreds of people gathered Tuesday night at a Minnesota mosque that was fire-bombed over the weekend.

Mohamed Omar, executive director of the Islamic center, told VOA that the gathering, which included community and political leaders and congregants, was meant to send message to those behind the attack.

“The goal of the gathering was to show those targeting us because of what we believe that there are many other non-Muslim Minnesotans who oppose their ideology,” said Omar.

The FBI is investigating but their were no security cameras. Maybe some of the donations will go toward purchasing security cameras. It's a shame they are needed everywhere these days.

Device in mosque bombing showed "more sophistication" than expected, officials say

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The FBI is working to locate those responsible for throwing an explosive device into Minnesota's largest mosque.

A U.S. official tells CBS News the explosive was a pipe-bomb type device.

Officials say the device showed "more sophistication" than expected. The FBI was called in and is taking the lead role in the investigation.

Michael Hari, 49, of Clarence, has pleaded not guilty to multiple civil rights and hate crimes stemming from the pipe bombing of Dar al-Farooq Islamic Center in Bloomington.

Jury selection is scheduled to begin Monday in the trial of the leader of an Illinois anti-government group.

His trial is expected to last about three weeks.

Trial to begin for man accused in Minnesota mosque bombing

A seven-month investigation led authorities to Clarence, Illinois, a rural community about 120 miles (190 kilometers) south of Chicago, where Hari and his co-defendants, Michael McWhorter and Joe Morris, lived.
