Thomas Martens, a former FBI agent, told 911 he had been “in an argument” with his son-in-law and that he had “struck him with a baseball bat”, the Irish Daily Mail reports. According to an police incident report seen by the paper, the incident was recorded as “an assault” by 911.
...
His wife Molly was believed to have been the main suspect but police in the US have confirmed that her father Thomas Martens (65), a retired FBI agent, is also a person of interest.

Just wondering about this comment from the defence lawyers. They cite a video that was taken of MM a few hours after the murder and the fact that the prosecution did not show it. "That alone would have been a show stopper". If the defence thought this video was a show stopper, why did they not present it? Why highlight something as evidence for their case that the prosecution did not do when they could have done it themselves? Surely the defence would have had access to this video.

The defense could have subpoened the video and entered it into evidence. It is curious to me that neither side chose to use the video. Anyway, I do not think the jurors will take this bait, they will know that the defense had access to all the prosecution evidence, as required by law, and nothing has been withheld from them.

It's reminiscent the prosecution's closing that is of that lady attorney who famously in court during closing loudly before jurors counted the number of blows to victim while holding the weapon. If I'm not wrong I think it was a self defence/DV case too. Cannot think of her name but it was powerful!

Even when MEs narrow down a TOD it is never to the exact minute and is always a guesstimate time interval with time leeways. So I really think it isn't that important. The first responders are very good in knowing when a body is way too cool for someone to have just died. I think their testimony will be enough for the jury to know the defendants stage the crime scene before calling 911.

I know its not to the exact minute, but I am thinking in terms of hours, not minutes.

How do you feel kitty ? What way are you leaning ? What way is everyone leaning for verdicts?

Yes! Kelly Siegler from Houston, TX. It was a very powerful closing argument, in a similar trial. She won the case.

Wow, just wow. That was some closing statement from the prosecution. They hammered everything home not just verbally but also visually, complete with sound effects. Slamming the bat and brick on the table was an excellent move.

The numerous holes in TM statement were pointed out, they are glaringly obvious but him rounding them all up in one speech was very effective. TM wants the jury to believe that he acted in self defence, that JC was basically an animal, all this alteration happened over the space of nearly 30 minutes but nobody uttered a word. JC was strangling MM but there was not one mark on her. Not credible.

He wants the jury to believe that he alone took the bat after hearing screams and his wife stayed calmly in the downstairs room. Not credible. He does not remember hitting the walls, he does not remember hitting JC while he was close to or on the ground. He does not remember either himself or his wife receiving numerous calls from MM while they were in transit to the house. He does not recall any blows being made by the paving stone but MM told him afterwards that she hit him. If he was there for all the alteration and MM hit him with the brick before hand, then JC would have been covered in blood when TM entered the room, but he does not remember this. If MM used the brick during the alteration he would have seen it but no, he had no knowledge of it. Not credible.

TM claims that he called 911 within two minutes of JC going down, but medics found the body cold when they got there. He states that he and MM preformed CPR but their demeanour and the lack of blood on either of them suggests they did not.

The state want the jury to believe that the lack of injuries on the lower part of JC's face was because MM head had been there. But MM has not injuries on her, that is some batting skills.

If the jury find any part of his statement not credible, then the whole statement is in question, particularly with the knowledge that TM hated JC. They have no defence. The prosecution did a sterling job in their final rebuttal, the more I was reading the more I am convinced that both will be found guilty.

I feel the prosecution had a very strong case, and performed well. However, juries can be unpredictable.

Predictions anyone? Not what you wish or hope or think is fair...what you believe after the trial presentations... as we know them, of course.

After that closing I'm changing my predictions. Every time that bat came down...

Both guilty...murder 2nd degree.

Lost in process..

We have spent 2 yrs discussing it here. uncovered and explored so much..
None of it was relevant to the way they conducted this trial.
I dont understand process and as outcome will come from process...

I believe the murder was pre-meditated, I believe its possible TM and JC had a fisticiff earlier- broken nose may have occurred then.
I believe there were many motives, much malice and the case should have been tried as Murder1.
I believe they will appeal and will drag it out for years.
I sincerely hope I am completely wrong.

I too changed my predictions after that closing, yesterday I was inclined to think that TM would be convicted on 2nd degree and MM on Manslaughter but after that I predict both guilty on 2nd degree.

See Mallory Lane latest tweets.. will attempt to copypast
He threw himself to the ground to demonstrate Thomas Martens' testimony, where he claims Jason Corbett threw him across the bedroom floor.

He used other prosecuting attorneys as props to demonstrate what is alleged to have happened inside the Corbett home on August 2, 2015.

Mr. Martin acted out back and forth convo between Martens and Corbett, "let her go; I'm going to kill her," raised voice w/ea. repetition.

Martin said, "They didn't just kill him, they over-killed him. That's the big picture."
Martin said, "Jason Corbett did not have to die. He did not have to die in his own bedroom. Jack and Sarah did not have to become orphans."
"...He did not have to die that brutal, viciously savage death at the hands of the woman he came to America for...."
"...He did not have to die at the hands of her father."
He told jury, "You have a duty to give a verdict that speaks the truth, that says Jason didn't have to die."

Tm is the only one being charged??

Yes, mary, I see it that way, as well. However, the fact one of the defendants is an attractive, young, women (on the outside) concerns me. In our beauty obsessed culture, I believe this goes against the prosecution. Really hope I'm wrong.
