On Aug. 4, 1997, Fiona Yu, 21, was sexually assaulted and strangled by an attacker at her apartment in Tempe.

Yu, who was an Arizona State University senior studying accounting, was last seen by her neighbor about 4:30 p.m., when she was riding a bicycle around her residence, police said.

About 90 minutes after, her roommate found Yu barely alive on the second floor. She later died of her injuries.
Tempe police detectives tracked down a few possible suspects but soon realized their DNA testing did not match a DNA sample collected at Yu's apartment.

Duran said Tempe police never stopped trying to identify the suspect, and though the predicted image might not exactly match the suspect's face, she still hopes this will draw renewed attention to the 20-year-old investigation.

Unlike traditional DNA testing, Snapshot makes it possible to predict a person's face with at least 1 nano gram of DNA, which can easily be acquired in most crime scenes, Greytak said.

It was just after 5 p.m. on Aug. 4, 1997, when an unknown suspect sexually assaulted and strangled 21-year-old Fiona Yu to death inside her apartment near 1015 S. Stanley Dr. in Tempe.

The suspect fled the apartment and the case went cold. But advancement in DNA technology may be changing that.

In a news release Thursday, Tempe police said investigators are looking for a Hispanic man, approximately 45 years old with light brown skin, brown eyes, black hair.

According to Tempe police, the digital composite matches a similar description given during another sexual assault incident within a few days and close proximity to Yu’s murder.

They believe the two may have been committed by the same suspect.

I’m still convinced something isn’t right with the maintenance man who came forward to provide a potential suspect sighting. Why did he want his identity hidden? Did they ever get his dna tested? Some of the statements he made during his interview were concerning.

New technology to help solve Tempe cold case
''At the time of the crime, the man was believed to have looked 25 years old with a body mass index of 22.

A composite sketch was also created to see what the suspect would like today.

He’s believed to be 45 years old, Hispanic with light brown skin, brown eyes and black hair.

Around the time of Yu’s death, authorities were investigating another sexual assault that happened in the same area. Officials believe the crimes may have been committed by the same person.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Tempe Police Department or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.''
