I have not seen this case, so wanted to start a thread for this sweet girl.

Maliyha Hope Garcia died after years of starvation at the hands of her adoptive parents, Court records show they debated whether to get her help in the days leading up to her death. They tried to say she had been refusing to eat due to the flu, but her body showed the truth: starvation.

The girl was adopted by her uncle, Estevan Garcia, when Maliyha was 3 months old. Her birth mother lost custody of her due to Meth. The uncle then married Sacora Horn-Garcia in Dec 2014. When their families blended, there were numerous children. In her obituary written by the parents, they listed 9 sisters. http://www.bendbulletin.com/obituaries/4952025-151/maliyha-hope-garcia
None of the other children showed any evidence of abuse or neglect.

The parents are in jail awaiting trial, indicted for murder. They pled not-guilty. http://www.bendbulletin.com/home/5523157-151/redmond-couple-charged-with-murder-plead-not-guilty

Just how???? Why??? Why does this keep happening? Am I the only one who worries I overfeed my kids? I never want them to feel starved. I just don't and never will understand how you can purposefully torture another person especially a child.. I was adopted myself and if they didn't want to bother why volunteer to adopt. I'm so disgusted kids seem to never be safe anymore to just enjoy their childhood. We have got to protect them better

Both of them sure look like they haven't missed a meal.

the more I read about this case, it seems like this child was the repository for all the hate and badness in the family. The other children got what they needed, and watched as she was punished. Many neighbor children came out and told stories, after she died, about what they witnessed. Just horrible things. Everyone got a hot meal, she got a small salad. Everyone got out of the water, changed into warm clothes and sat by the campfire but she had to stand in her wet suit outside of the ring of fire. Everyone watched a movie, she had to read a book. There was an alarm on her door to alert them if she tried to get to the kitchen at night to eat. When she visited a neighbor's house, she ate until she threw up.

Why no one said anything?

If there is a lesson for the world from Maliyha's death, it is to speak up. We often get stuck in not wanting to offend or be wrong.

It seems to happen sometimes in abuse cases. One child is singled out for abuse more so than the others. In this particular case the child wasn't a bio child of either one of them, which is presumably why she was the target. As for neighbors, it's hard to understand why they didn't report if they saw something-of course we don't know yet if people were reporting-in some of this cases DCF is notified but don't do anything.

The trial of Estevan Adrian Garcia and Sacora Rose Horn-Garcia, accused of murdering their 5-year-old daughter by withholding food and medical attention, has been delayed yet again.

Now, one of Deschutes County’s most high-profile criminal cases won’t be decided until at least October.

The seven-week trial to begin with jury selection Sept. 17. Motions in the case will be due in early summer and a hearing to go over them is scheduled for August.

Another delay in trial of parents accused of starving child to death

There were adults who recognized signs of trouble in Redmond preschooler Maliyha Hope Garcia and spoke up.

In powerful testimony Tuesday, witnesses in the starvation murder trial of Maliyha’s parents, Sacora Horn-Garcia and Estevan Garcia, said they reached out with concerns the couple’s daughter did not seem healthy.

One family friend sent a Facebook message that detailed her fears that the child was too thin and got an LOL in response. A day care provider said Maliyha ate so much she was like “a bottomless pit.”
