From September 2019 (graphic details of Simpson’s death):

1 defendant gets life for killing Burlington man in 2017

Sean Damien Castorina, 44, will spend the rest of his life in prison after pleading guilty Thursday, Sept. 12, in the brutal murder of 84-year-old Harold Dean Simpson.

"What kind of monster animal would beat up and kill an old man?" Mark Hall said, reading a statement his late wife Sherri Hall, Simpson's daughter, wrote before her death.

...

Castorina took an Alford plea, pleading guilty without admitting guilt, in exchange for a life sentence without parole. The Alamance County District Attorney's Office announced it would seek the death penalty against Castorina and Dawson just a few months after they were arrested and extradited back to Alamance County. Charges against Dawson are pending.

This was not Castorina's first murder conviction. He served 13 years in prison for the 2003 killing of 27-year-old Sean Nichols in Johnston County. He shot Nichols, his boss, in the back and again in the face on a hunting trip over a dispute about his paycheck, covered the body and left it in the woods, to be found weeks later.
