Found Safe IN - Anthony Mitchell, 9, Hammond, 2 Sept 2017

9-year-old boy suffering from a developmental disability has gone missing in Hammond Ind. and police are asking the public's assistance in finding him Saturday night.

Anthony Mitchell, 9, of the 100 block of Ruth Street in Hammond, Ind. left his home around 3 p.m. and has not returned, Hammond police said.


Anthony was last seen wearing gray pajama pants and a dark blue T-shirt. He stands about 3-foot-5, is African American with a light complexion, and has a developmental disability.

As of about 8 p.m., several agencies remain involved in the search including K9 Units and a Lake County Sheriff's Helicopter.

As of Saturday evening, police officers from several agencies were using dogs and a helicopter to help find him.

Multiple police agencies were searching for him Saturday night, including with K-9 units and a Lake County sheriff's office helicopter, police said.

At about 11 p.m., he was found near his home and taken home safely.

A Hammond police officer was driving around the area with his windows down when he heard the boy say "help." He got out of his car and searched for him, finding him tucked in a bush.

"We'd been worried that he was hurt," said the officer who found him. "So, we're just really relieved. I told him, 'Hey dude, we've been looking for you all night.' We're just glad that he's OK."


The officer said he was cold, but seemed OK.

It was unclear if the boy was in the same area all day. He was located less than a half mile from the family's home.

Oh thank goodness! Poor kid was hiding in a bush and saying "help". Maybe he was lost and scared of the dark? So happy for a good outcome!
