One of the most respected judges in the state. Judge Stephens not only oversaw the case in the murder of Michelle Fisher Young, a case that took nearly 11 years and was upheld by the NC Supreme Court, but he was a steady, guiding hand in the Superior Court of Wake County for 33 years.

Congratulations Judge Stephens. You'll be missed by many in NC.

We now reverse the Court of Appeals’ decision and remand this case to the Court of Appeals for consideration of defendant’s remaining challenges to the trial court’s judgment,” the Supreme Court wrote.
The court’s 44-page decision, written with lengthy and specific legal references, was effectively an endorsement of the work of Wake County Superior Court Judge Donald Stephens, who oversaw both Young trials.

Extremely shoddy and ill-informed journalism. The Supreme Court didn't say that Stephens was right, they said that the Defense erred when they did not use the proper objection. It would have been reverseable error otherwise.

Nonetheless, even though I disagreed with the decision to allow the civil trial evidence to be introduced, I do think Judge Stephens was overall an extremely adept and fair judge based on the way he conducted himself at the trial.
