On March 28, 2002, the skeletal remains of a black woman were found in Columbia, on Illinois 3 near Gall Road.

Officials estimated her body had been in the creek bed near Illinois 3 for six months to a year, based on the decomposition

The Monroe County forensic medical investigator estimated the woman to be short, about 4-foot-10 to 5-foot-4, and somewhere in the range of 30-50 years old. She was wearing an extra-large black T-shirt with the word “Mavericks” written above of a large “M” and a pair of khaki size 3 Chazz Credentials shorts.

Anyone with information about the woman can call the Columbia Police Department at 618-281-6616.

These clothes belong to a woman whose body was found in 2002 on State Route 3. Police believe if they can identify the maverick logo on the shirt, they have a good chance of identifying the victim.

Are there threads for each of the UID listed in the article in your original post? One of the females could match a St. Louis missing woman.

I'm thinking the "Mavericks" shirt is from a high school or maybe even a middle school. But the big "M" makes me think the school's name starts with an M. My high school had a similar logo with a big M and mascot name (Blue Devils) in a horizontal bar across the M.

I feel the shirt looks like a high school athletics logo. I searched mascotdb.com for a list of Mavericks. I narrowed the search to high schools and looked for orange school colors (that's what the shirt looks like to me) and the possible use of a serif font capital M.

That lead me to Mead High School near Aurora CO. A school with a big athletics program, 12 hours away directly west on I-70.

There is an MP from that area that fits the demographics and time range, Daphne Hope. https://www.findthemissing.org/en/cases/19283/
She was involved in prostitution, which would fit the MO of Maury Travis, who I'm guessing is a suspect in the murder of the UID.

However, they appear to both have DNA available in NamUs.

As Dotr said, very interesting. I used the same database as you, and one school's colors stood out to me. James Madison High in San Antonio, Texas jumped out color wise since its colors are blue and orange, like the clothing found with the UID.

Though, as you can see the school currently uses two logos, an orange "M" with "Madison" in blue across it, and an orange interlocking "JM" with a blue border. But, it would not surprise me if clothing with "Mavericks" across the M logo instead of "Madison" were sold. My High School did such a thing, having clothing with both the school name and mascot name across the M logo available.

University of Texas Arlington Mavericks has a dark blue and orange logo. They also have some shirts in black and orange, and may have 20 years ago as well. UT Arlington is in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

The only vintage pieces from that school I could find were all orange, like most University of Texas pieces. Vintage University of Texas clothing does come in black and orange.

Maybe they were just the UT Mavericks before and evolved into the blue and orange. A lot of sports teams change up their jersey colors.

Also, Sharon Eugenia Davis looks strikingly like this Jane Doe to me.

March 28, 2002 - Unidentified Female
''On Thursday, March 28, 2002, the Columbia Police Department along with the Major Case Squad began investigating the skeletal remains found on a creek bed on Route 3 near Gall Road in Columbia. Investigators located a green shirt with a large "M" and the word "Mavericks", in orange or yellow lettering, across the front of the shirt. The shirt also had two buttons at the top similar to a softball jersey. The shirt is an adult XL. Also at the scene were a pair of khaki colored size 3 "Chazzz Credentials" shorts.

A preliminary report by the Forensic Medical Investigator describes this person as a female, age 33 to 50, with African American ancestry, 5' 01" "give or take three inches", and believed to have children. The victim possibly had a scar across her forehead.''

''The Medical Investigator believed the person has been deceased at least six months but no more than one year.'

Do we know if Sharon Davis has been submitted and/or ruled out? Imo I feel like the most likely explanation is that her husband was behind her disappearance, but she could have left voluntarily and ran into this serial killer later on, if she really was a victim of him.

Also, the fact that the shirt was a size XL stands out to me. I'm 5'2", petite but not overly skinny, and an XL would be huge on me. Given that the UID was wearing size 3 shorts, I assume it would've been significantly too big on her too. Maybe she borrowed the shirt from someone, or she was a transient and got it from a thrift store? If this is Sharon Davis, maybe the shirt belonged to her husband or son?

@dorothyland did you ever submit/hear back?

No I never did. I've never submit before and came to this match when I first started posting here a couple of years ago. I feel much more confident now with some experience of learning from others. Thank you for reminding me. I'll try submitting her this week!

I sell vintage clothing for a living and an XL back then would equally a size large now. A size three in jeans would be about a size two today. Also, an oversize shirt used to be the thing to work out in (Sharon's car was found near a Bally fitness) and I used to be a size 2 and wore XL shirts and sweatshirts all the time (still do).

It's also possible her husband had a hit on her and had her body taken and dumped far away from him. Total speculation but it's not impossible.
