YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) — A hunk of rock "the size of an apartment building" fell off the granite face of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park on Wednesday, killing one person and injuring another on a mountain at the height of climbing season, officials and witnesses said.

[.....]

Several people made emergency calls, reporting the rock fall from the Waterfall route on the east buttress of El Capitan.

Officials didn't provide details on the size of the rock fall, but climbers posted pictures on social media from hundreds of feet up the wall showing billowing white dust moments after the crash.

A second rock slide was reported at Yosemite National Park’s El Capitan on Thursday, a day after a rockfall on the granite monolith killed a British tourist and seriously injured his female companion, park officials said.

Tourists were asked to use Southside Drive to exit Yosemite Valley, as the rockfall left Northside Drive closed. It’s unclear whether anyone was hurt in Thursday’s slide.

Yosemite National Park officials say they have closed one of the exit routes from the park after a new rock fall from El Capitan.

The slide came Thursday, a day after a similar slide on Wednesday killed a British climber and injured his female companion.

Climbers say Thursday's rock slide was much larger than the one Wednesday.

Another major rock fall from El Capitan in Yosemite National Park apparently injured a man Thursday, a day after a couple from the United Kingdom were caught beneath a massive sheet of falling granite.

The man from the United Kingdom died Wednesday, and the woman was seriously injured.

The man injured Thursday was being taken away in an ambulance. His condition was not immediately known.
