Las Vegas shooting death toll rises to 59, no apparent connection to international terror

The shooter, perched on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel, sent more than 22,000 country music fans scrambling for their lives.
One witness described the shooting as "non-stop gunfire."

The police found the gunman, whom they identified as Stephen Paddock, 64, dead in his room at the hotel. Investigators were still combing through Mr. Paddock’s background and searching his home on Monday.

[h=1]'This isn't supposed to happen here': hush falls over Las Vegas after shooting[/h] Streets were sealed off. Shows were cancelled. Bars shut. America’s entertainment fantasia was now a crime scene
As night fell across Las Vegas on Monday so did an unfamiliar hush as residents and visitors grappled with the realisation that America’s entertainment fantasia was now a crime scene.

Streets around the concert site and the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino were sealed off as police forensic teams gathered evidence. Resorts cancelled David Copperfield, Cirque du Soleil, the Blue Man Group and other major shows, saying they would resume on Tuesday.

Traffic was light. “This is the quietest I’ve seen the city since 9/11. I don’t think I’ve heard a horn blow,” said Shelley Lyons, 54, a Lyft driver. “People are just going through the motions. It’s surreal.”

Wow! I know this isn't really the point of this thread, but $400,000 from one person! I think that will be one tiny light in this tragedy. Vegas is all about money and plenty of people have it. I have a feeling that the victims and their families will at least have their medical and funeral expenses paid by business and kind people that connect with Las Vegas. It can never erase or undo what this one human has done, but at least it can take that one small hardship away. I feel like Mr. ROgers, looking for the good in the middle of tragedy.

I mentioned in the other thread that it is common to find personality disorders in pathological gamblers. Most commonly Cluster B. (A and C as well). Here is a link to the abstract of an article in a respected peer reviewed journal : https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27798487

Commonly seen personality disorders among pathological or problem gamblers represent Cluster B disorders. There are reports indicating prevalence of Clusters A and C personality disorders as well. The rates of personality disorders among pathological gamblers reported in these studies align with Hill's guidelines - Strength, Specificity, Temporality, Biological gradient, Plausibility and Replicability indicating a strong association between pathological gambling and personality disorders. Studies are predominantly cross-sectional and consistently show that the presence of a personality disorder is associated with gambling severity and early age of onset pathological gambling.

Food for thought.

When did he check in and what is the reason his wife was not with him?

I apologize for asking for basic info

Las Vegas shooter’s mom told North Texas neighbor he was a ‘bad boy’
http://www.star-telegram.com/news/local/community/dallas/article176593296.html

Some things caught my attention.

MESQUITE - The mother of Stephen Paddock, the gunman accused of the mass shooting in Las Vegas, once described him to a North Texas neighbor as a “bad boy,” the neighbor said in an interview Monday

“He wasn’t very sociable,” said Jorge Juertes, who lives next door to the home where Paddock’s mother lived and met him once. “She [his mother] said he’s a bad boy.”

“We’d always have parties and now I’m thinking about how we could have made him mad,” Alameida said. “He’s crazy.”

Interesting to note he lived in Mesquite, Texas and Mesquite, Nevada.

They named him, but I don't want to misspell the name.

The media have said that he gambled and had real estate (and 'investments') and was pretty well-off.

He is reportedly very wealthy, lived and breathed gambling, and a regular at Casinos. His roommate/girlfriend was also involved and employed in High Stakes gambling. Paying for Two rooms would not be odd in those circumstances. They also could have been comps with his/ their lifestyle.

carrying this over - not new - but of interest to me and maybe others.

Las Vegas Shooter Stephen Paddock Had Recent Large Gambling Transactions

On several occasions, Stephen Paddock gambled more than $10,000 per day — and in some cases more than than $20,000 and $30,000 a day — at Las Vegas casinos, according to an NBC News source who read the suspect's Multiple Currency Transaction Reports (CTR) and a casino gaming executive.

According to a U.S. statute, a CTR is a Treasury- and IRS-mandated report that casinos have to file when "each transaction in currency involving cash-in and cash-out of more than $10,000 in a gaming day."

Do we have a media thread yet? There's going to be quite a bit to keep track of in that regard . . .

ETA MEDIA MAP TIMELINE ONLY THREAD

remember, the media thread will only be as useful as you make it. Sometimes keeping the headline is helpful, also a key snip of new or interesting info, and a link.

Pretty sure it was Stephen J Cloobeck, according to the going around. He has to do several donations because they limit each donation to $50,000. He's very well known for his generosity. He owns Diamond Resorts, which is headquartered (I believe) in Las Vegas.

Lots of generous people out there and I don't think it hurts to highlight that. In fact, it needed. Not to go completely off topic, but we need the light in the dark, especially when it is darkest, like right now.
