Authorities from the state medical examiner's office collected the remains. So far, the sex, age, race, and manner of death are unknown and pending an autopsy. Police said Thursday they believe the remains had been in the water for a long period of time.

There is no indication of foul play, but the county has had several cases of human remains uncovered in recent months.

SHADY SIDE, MD — The unidentified skeletal human remains found in Shady Side are those of a woman in her 20s to age 30, authorities said Friday. The grim discovery was made at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Holly Drive and Chesapeake Drive, according to Anne Arundel County Police, who say the skeletal remains found on the shoreline had washed ashore. Authorities believe the remains are that of someone who went missing within the past year.

In an update Friday, police said they were called for a report of remains found along the shore, and a wider search by patrol officers, detectives and members of the Department of Natural Resources recovered additional human skeletal remains. A preliminary assessment by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner shows the remains are those of a Caucasian or Asian woman in her mid-20s to 30 years old, who was about 5-feet 3-inches tall.

[h=1]UPDATE: DNA confirms human remains discovered in Shady Side from same person[/h]
This is an update to two prior stories where human remains were discovered in South County. On April 4, 2018, detectives were notified that a DNA analysis has been able to confirm the human remains discovered on October 18, 2017 and October 29, 2017 both contain the same DNA profile. Further examination of the remains is being completed to obtain as many physical descriptors as possible to assist with the identity of the individual as well as cause and manner of death

I've only just heard about this, and it's very close to where I used to live. Are there any updates?

UPDATE: The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has been thoroughly examining the recovered human remains. Their examination concluded the human remains displayed apparent trauma with the manner being homicide. The Anne Arundel County Police is utilizing DNA Phenotyping in order to assist in identifying the unknown human remains.

DNA Phenotyping is the prediction of physical appearance from DNA. It can be used to generate leads in cases where there are no suspects or database hits, to narrow suspect lists, and to help solve human remains cases. DNA carries the genetic instruction set for an individual’s physical characteristics, producing the wide range of appearances among people.

By determining how genetic information translates into physical appearance, it is possible to “reverse-engineer” DNA into a physical profile. Snapshot reads tens of thousands of genetic variants (“genotypes”) from a DNA sample and uses this information to predict what an unknown person looks like.

This is a very fluid and active investigation where the Anne Arundel County Police are urging anyone with information to come forward by calling the Anne Arundel County Homicide Unit at 410-222-4731.

If people with information wish to remain anonymous they can also contact the Anne Arundel County Police Tip Line 410-222-4700 or Metro Crime Stoppers.

Human remains found in Shady Side linked to murder

SHADY SIDE, MD — Tests show that an Annapolis woman who was last seen on Sept. 26, 2017, is the homicide victim whose skeletal remains were found in Shady Side about three weeks later, Anne Arundel County Police say. The remains of Megan Leah Tilman, 43, of Rockwell Court, were found Oct. 18, 2017, in the area of Holly Drive and Chesapeake Drive where they had washed ashore.

Investigators released Tilman's name on April 10 after DNA tests of the remains and her family members confirmed her identity. Tilman was reported missing to the Annapolis Police Department on Nov. 1, 2017, by a family member.

On Feb. 14, 2019, authorities said the medical examiner concluded Tilman died from apparent trauma with the manner of death being homicide.

Meanwhile, two weeks before the missing persons report was filed with Annapolis police, authorities were called on Oct. 18, 2017, to the scene of human remains found on the Maryland shore in Shady Side, police said.

The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide, Anne Arundel County Police said in a news release.

After pairing the discovery with the missing persons report, police collected DNA samples from Megan's relatives and were able to identify Megan as the victim.

William Rice and Christina Gail Harnish

On Wednesday, more than four years later, authorities in Arizona arrested Rice, 46, and Stallings, also known as Christina Gail Harnish, 45, as suspects in Megan's murder. They were picked up in a homeless camp by Pima County Sheriff's deputies, who learned from Anne Arundel County police that the pair was in the Tucson area, reports AzFamily.com.

Both are being held in Arizona for extradition to Maryland, where they will be formally charged and have the opportunity to enter pleas. Attorneys for the pair were not immediately identified.

"There's no way to describe my emotions," Megan's father said after the arrests, reports WMAR. "It was just like a huge brick had been lifted off me."

"No one deserves what Megan went through," he said.

Anne Arundel County Police Lt. Jacklyn Davis said that "The two that have been arrested for this offense had been on detective's radar from the beginning, and like I said, sometimes it's that old movie line, 'It's not what you know, it's what you can prove,'" according to WMAR.

Megan's aunt, Shannon Perry, told the TV station: "We kind of knew we were getting close to an arrest but it actually happening was pretty amazing. It's kind of [like] we're able to breathe again."

The victim's father, Jim Tilman, thanked authorities for the arrests and for continuing to work on the case, but he said it still doesn't take away the pain of losing a child.

'It's horrible, it's rough, you think about it every day. Even though it might not come to full surface. It's there, it's back there,' Tilman said.

Maryland authorities said Tilman was reported missing from her home in Annapolis in November 2017. She reportedly could be easily influenced and was described as having borderline intellectual functioning.

Before her death, Tilman reportedly had been living with her boyfriend, Rice, and Harnish in a rented townhome in the unit block of Rockwell Court in Annapolis with her mother, Gloria Owens, 62.

Megan Leah Tilman, 42, was found dead in 2019, two years after she was declared missing in Annapolis, Maryland.

Owens moved out of the home right before November of that year, and frictions between Megan and her family led to an apparent estrangement. Rice and Stallings had subsequently moved out of state.

A cousin of Tilman's reported her missing to Annapolis Police Department after she hadn't received any news from her weeks prior to her disappearance. Tilman's family feared the worst when their relative — who had two daughters, Paris and Grace, and a son, Ceci — failed to show up in court for a child custody hearing. .

Detectives discovered that the last verified contact Tilman had with anyone was on Saturday, October 7, 2017.

Human remains were found on the shoreline on Shady Side, Maryland, eleven days later and were identified as those of Tilman in April 2019. The case was quickly ruled as a homicide.

The victim's car - a champagne 1998 Jeep Cherokee - was found abandoned at a shopping center in Prince Georges County on November 3, 2017, two days after Tilman was reported as a missing person.
