A decomposed body that was found behind a Colbert County barn has been sent to the Alabama Department of Forensics in an ongoing effort to identify the person.
The body was found Monday evening off Elledge Loop near Elledge Lane, just north of Alabama 20.
Sheriff Frank Williamson said the body was found by a property owner who had noticed a bad smell near her home. It's unclear how long the body had been there, but Williamson said the property owner told authorities she had noticed the smell for weeks.
"Before (Monday) night, she apparently just hadn't walked far enough into the woods to find it," the sheriff said.
