COLD CASE: "He's someone, but he's not" — Unidentified man's identity sought

Unidentified human remains of man found near Vaughan storm pond

by Jeremy Grimaldi
It was on May 18 workers employed by the Ministry of the Environment studying the Asian Longhorn Beetle, discovered a partially decomposed skull, limbs and bones and a slew of goods consistent with the belongings of a homeless individual.

The remains and items were located in brush, near to 7211 Pine Valley Drive.
Although it’s unlikely we’ll ever know when the man passed away, there are clues, from one of yorkregion.com’s own newspapers.
Among his items, the Jan. 9, 2005 Vaughan Citizen was located, meaning prior to that date he was likely alive.
He was surrounded by his world’s meagre belongings including a Hespeler hockey bag full of clothes and even some sporting equipment including shin pads.
There was a pair of badly warn shoes, a walking stick, a bin of rotting food and another newspaper — The National Post, dated Nov. 23, 2004.
He was found to be white, between the ages of 50 and 80-year-old, between five feet nine inches and six feet three inches.

The man was suffering severe degenerative disease of the spine, the loss of many teeth, and arthritis.

He also appeared to have been missing part of a finger according to police.
But it would be folly to assume the man found in 2005 was from York Region Det. Courtice said, explaining that many people living this way of life are transient.

For example, Courtice located a real estate flyer from Stoney Creek among the items found near the remains.

Written on the card are a series of notes, which without some more information appear nonsensical.

He now hopes that someone might be able to decipher what appear to be equations or recognize the handwriting.
Det. Const. Duncan Way, the OPP facial reconstructionist, said the most fascinating part of working on the man’s bust was how his face “kind of appeared” to him as he was nearing completion

I would hope the investigators have ruled out any connection between this chap and the property featured on the flyer. With his health problems I can envisage a forced sale of his home for financial reasons and him keeping the flyer as a memento.

This man remains unidentified www.services.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/missing-disparus/case-dossier.jsf?case=2005000599&id=15 I must say the Canadian site is much easier to read than Namus.
Oddly, cannot access the link- will try another one.

Summary On May 18, 2005, this male, believed to be Caucasian and between 50 and 80 years old, was found on the bank of a reservoir in the "Pine Valley Open Space" located at 7211 Pine Valley Road, north of Highway 7, in Vaughan. Anthropological analysis has determined that he stood between 5'9" and 6'3" in life. He has grey/white hair and a grey/white beard several inches in length. He has poor dentition with the loss of most of his upper anterior teeth and most of his lower posterior teeth. The remaining teeth in his upper jaw have amalgam restorations. The end of his fifth finger of his left hand had been previously amputated. He also has a lesion, likely a tumor of the face, under his right eye which may have been obvious to the casual observer. He was wearing a black or green "Mark's Work Wearhouse" winter jacket, a blue or black knitted zippered sweater, a white long-sleeved shirt, a black long-sleeved shirt, a blue zippered vest and blue track pants. Nearby bed linens, clothing, personal belongings and food suggest that this person was homeless and living by the reservoir. The state of preservation of the remains is suggestive of a lengthy time since death (greater than one year), however, a newspaper dated to January 9, 2005 was found amongst this man's belongings suggesting a post-mortem interval of 4 months.
