Laura Babcock Murder Trial 10.31.17 - Day 7

This is the Babcock murder trial discussion thread.

A few general reminders about the trial:

Any testimony that might remain under Publication Ban, and/or any courtroom discussion that takes place when the jury is not present, is strictly off-limits.

Only testimony that is published through MSM reporting (newspaper articles, tweets, tv) is allowed. Provide a source link, and keep discussion focused on testimony as it becomes public knowledge.

The magnificent principle of “innocent until proven guilty” is for the court room … it is not required that the general public / Websleuths members adhere to that principle. Members are allowed to discuss, speculate, theorize, and judge according to opinions they develop from following the specifics of the case.

A few general reminders from Websleuths TOS aka The Rules.

At all times, remain VICTIM FRIENDLY. No bashing or passing judgment on the victim or family.

There is ZERO TOLERANCE for snarky or disrespectful posts. Don’t expect an explanation … you will find your post has simply disappeared, or that you can no longer post.

There is to be NO name calling or name variations, not even of the accused.

BICKERING between members is not allowed. If you disagree, that's fine, say so and move past the post. If a post is offensive, alert it and let the Mods review it. If you respond to the post, both the offensive post AND yours will be removed and may result in other consequences.

Alert on a post and move on without discussing it, and don't question the decisions of our Mods/Admin or Owner. Also do not expect personalized responses with explanations about a particular decision.

Do not abuse the WS Alert feature. Abuse includes, but is not limited to:
    • Overuse of the alert system
    • Repeatedly alerting on the same poster
    • Demanding a specific outcome
    • Alerting on the same post more than once

If you have any questions, use the Alert feature or send a PM and we will be happy to assist.

Laura Babcock was caught up in a love triangle before she disappeared, murder trial hears
By Shannon Martin, CBC News Oct 30, 2017

Laura Babcock was involved in a love triangle prior to her 2012 disappearance, text messages introduced at the trial of two men accused of killing the Toronto woman reveal.

The latest revelations came from one of Babcock's best friends, Megan Orr, 29, who now lives in the United States but flew back to Toronto to testify at the trial of Dellen Millard, 32, of Toronto, and Mark Smich, 30, of Oakville, Ont., who have both pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder.

Babcock has not been seen since early July 2012, and her body has never been found. Earlier in the trial, prosecutors told the jury that their theory is Babcock was killed and her body burned in an animal incinerator.

The Crown has suggested that the slaying of Babcock was possibly motivated by a love triangle, involving Millard and his girlfriend at the time, Christina Noudga.

Babcock was also romantically linked to Millard on and off.

The trial, being held in Ontario Superior Court in Toronto, is now in its second week.

More friends to detail Laura Babcock's final days before disappearance

Crown counsel Jill Cameron enters court Monday, along with her colleagues Ken Lockhart and Katie Doherty. (Martin Trainor/CBC)

The ups and downs of Laura Babcock's life, and the final days before her disappearance in the summer of 2012, will again be scrutinized as the trial into her alleged murder continues in Toronto.

The Crown has already called more than a dozen witnesses and at least a dozen more are expected to appear over the next nine weeks.

Babcock was 23 when friends and family suddenly stopped hearing from her. Her body was never recovered and prosecutors have told the jury they believe two men used an animal incinerator to dispose of it.

Let's hope today is a good day for the Crown and we dispel some of the "stories" DM is trying to tell through his cross examination of witnesses.

Good morning, Crown Ken Lockhart has just called the first witness for day 7 of the trial. His name is Bradley Dean, from the GTA.

Dean says Babcock was "actually quite articulate, intelligent, a conversationalist. She was fun." Her life seemed transitional, unsettled.

Bradley Dean met Laura Babcock in June 2012. He knew her as Elle, we've heard Babcock went by the name Elle Ryan on her social media accounts.

They met three times, through an escort service.

The first meeting was at his place in Yorkville. They spent an hour together, he says they hung out.

Dean says Babcock was "actually quite articulate, intelligent, a conversationalist. She was fun."

He says her life seemed transitional,┬ unsettled.

He describes their second meeting, a week later, also at his apartment. This time Babcock arrived with a suitcase. She said she didn't have anywhere to stay.

"I was hoping to help her. It wasn't appropriate for her to stay at my place, but I didn't want her to stay on the street."

Dean says she was "less composed, somewhat distraught." He called a couple of hotels.┬

Dean tells the jury members that Babcock, on this second meeting at his apartment, spent a significant time in the bathroom. When she came out, she had a nosebleed.

He says he's not qualified to comment on drug use and he himself is not a drug user.

Dean says Babcock spent the night, she slept on the couch.

"She had nowhere to go." They didn't connect this time through the escort service and he did not pay her. On the first visit, he gave her about $200.

They parted ways the next morning, Babcock left with her suitcase. Though he called a Best Western hotel, he did not give her money to pay for it.
