Police in Lehman Township say Adam Lutz, 22, of Nanticoke, went missing around 10:45 p.m. Thursday. Officers say Lutz was driving with a friend near Harveys Lake and Lake Silkworth.

Lutz apparently pulled over on Roberts Street and Route 29 in Lake Silkworth and went missing. The friend then called 911. Police say Lutz's vehicle was left behind and towed.

Were drugs involved? Does he have a history of mental illness?

I don't think this is going to end well sadly...

This case has been on my mind all day, and I want to throw out a possible theory to you all. As a starting point, I wanted to work under the assumption that the friend's statement was truthful, then brainstorm plausible explanations for the events described by the friend. I started considering whether alcohol involvement could help explain any pieces of the odd story.

What if one or both of the friends were intoxicated during the drive and began feeling nauseous or needed to urinate? I'm sure I'm not the only one here who has been in a vehicle with a drunk friend (or been that drunk friend!) who began feeling sick or desperately needing to empty their bladder, requiring the driver to pull over to the side of the road so that they could vomit or urinate.

Again, working under the assumption that the friend is being truthful, four things we know are that Adam pulled the vehicle over twice, Adam disappeared during the second stop, the friend's phone ended up outside the vehicle, and the reason for the second stop was for the friend to retrieve his phone. Four things we don't know are the reason for the first stop, the distance between the stops, Adam's reason for walking away from his vehicle, and how/why the friend's phone managed to be outside the vehicle.

What if the first stop was made because one of them was feeling sick or needed to urinate? The friend could have unknowingly dropped his phone during the first stop, while he was outside the vehicle. I think it would be fair to say that intoxication could increase the likelihood of this happening. The second stop could have been made shortly after the first, once the friend realized he couldn't locate his phone inside the vehicle. While the friend walked (or possibly stumbled?) back to the location of the initial stop, hoping to see his phone laying undamaged along the road, Adam disappeared. The friend's visual focus would have been towards the ground and in the opposite direction of the vehicle. Could that explain how the friend was able to lose track of Adam during the stop?

Obviously, the question of "why" Adam disappeared in that short time frame remains. I'm curious whether Adam enjoyed any outdoor recreation in wooded terrains (i.e., hunting, hiking, ATV riding, wildlife/landscape photography, or even casual marijuana-enhanced strolls through the woods). Could he have seen something of interest in the woods and gone to check it out real quick? Would walking into the woods on an ordinary day (or night) be considered out-of-character for Adam? If so, did alcohol consumption play a role in this abnormal behavior? At this point, I'm just thinking out loud, as we have too little information about Adam to know what type of behaviors (and associated reasoning) would be normal for him. I'm also cognizant that Adam's family and law enforcement may know exactly why the events unfolded the way they did that night.

Where are you Adam? I pray that you have somehow found a way to stay warm during these cold nights, and that you are located and reunited with your loved ones before another night falls upon us.

Search for missing Nanticoke man stretches into third day

LEHMAN TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WOLF) -- The search for a Nanticoke man in the Back Mountain section of Luzerne County stretched into its third day today.

Dive teams packed up around 2:30 this afternoon after searching some areas of the lake two and three times over.

More boats were sent out to search the perimeter of the lake, while others continued to scour the area on foot.

That search was expected to continue until nightfall and continue tomorrow.

This case baffles me. Where could he have gone and why? PA has also been experiencing quite the coldfront that really started to get into the freezing temps Thursday night into Friday. Hoping he found shelter somewhere and will be found safe.

Friends of Lutz are gathering by Lake Silkworth Monday morning as authorities begin to assemble resources for the day hoping to find clues to his where abouts. On Monday morning search and rescue dogs are on scene, but they're waiting for a boat to arrive from monroe county before they hit the water.

Even though officials no longer consider this a rescue effort, responders say they will do whatever it takes to bring Lutz home.

Crews Find Area of Interest on Lake Silkworth for Missing Man

LAKE SILKWORTH -- Crews have now been searching for five days, looking for Adam Lutz of Nanticoke. On Monday, they changed the focus of their search from land to the water.

With the help of some specialized K-9 units, officials said they identified an area of interest on Lake Silkworth, not far from where Lutz was last seen. A sonar map is being created for that section of the lake to see what officials can find.

Police are also looking over surveillance video, which they say shows Lutz walking toward the lake.

Search for Missing Man Suspended Until Weekend

Crews have been looking for Adam Lutz from Nanticoke since last week.

They have been scouring Lake Silkworth near Sweet Valley, and officials tell Newswatch 16 they are waiting for a special dive team from New Jersey to help with the search.

If it turns out he is in the lake, I am just not going to understand how he walked down the street, crossed 29, got over to the area not blocked by barriers or a chainlink fence and accidentally fell a short span into a lake he is very familiar with. I was expecting him to be found in the pond or ravine at the other end of the street the bar is on.

The friend said he was last seen walking into the woods without his coat on.

Looks like they were right at the lake when they stopped. It will be the point at the bottom of the lake in the pic where Route 29 and the road that continues on to the right around the lake intersect.

On Tuesday, officials put their search for him on hold until a special dive team from New Jersey arrived. That team was expected on Saturday.


Lehman Township police now say that crew is set to arrive ahead of schedule, so search efforts will resume in the morning.

"'We’ve suspended the search for a couple days to regroup and get a new plan,” said Lehman Twp. police Sgt. Mark Liparela. 'We are conducting interview with friends ... we possibly will regroup on Saturday out there.'
