Mapleton Police Chief John Jackson said Friday that the bodies of 45-year-old Timothy Griffith, 42-year-old Jessica Griffith, 16-year-old Samantha Badel and 5-year-old Alexendre Griffith were discovered by officers conducting a welfare check at the family’s home at about 1500 North on U.S. 89, at about 9:40 p.m. Thursday.

Badel is Jessica Griffith’s biological daughter and a stepdaughter to Timothy Griffith, police said, and Alexendre is the biological son of both adults. The family moved to Mapleton from Switzerland this past summer, at about the time Timothy Griffith was hired locally in July, police said.

Neighbors called police after they noticed the family’s cars had not moved and their lights had not been turned off for days, authorities said.

One member of the family had also not shown up for work, according to police.

From the Daily Mail:

So far, investigators believe that the shooting was a murder suicide.

When asked why they think that, Chief Jackson said 'just the layout of where bodies were positioned'.

Just a note: The DM says the family moved to UT from France but I think that's wrong because the other articles say they moved from Switzerland. I did read earlier that the mother was a native of Europe and the DM says she's from France, so I think that's where the DM got the idea the family moved to UT from France.

Utah parents killed themselves, kids after mom falsely believed she had cancer

Believed it or tried to convince husband she had it? She was sending him links to websites on ovarian cancer.

"It’s not clear why she spoke extensively with her husband about her pain and sent him links to ovarian cancer websites, he said."

I wonder if she really did convince herself that she had cancer (still no reason to kill everyone) or if she completely fabricated the whole thing. Sometimes severe hypochondriacs and those with Munchhausen Syndrome can truly convince themselves that they have a certain disease. They'll become so convinced that they'll doctor shop, trying to find one to diagnose them with it. I'm kind of fascinated by this (by the cancer part). As a mother with a progressive medical condition that is slowly killing me, I am enraged by this entire story-not just at her but at her husband for going along with it. What's wrong with these people? (Seriously, what's wrong? I need lots of medical experts to weigh in in the media.)

She deleted her texts and emails to her husband, so that indicates to me she didn't want others to know her role in it. I don't think she believed she had cancer, I think she just managed to convince her husband she had it. Why is anyone's guess.

"Law enforcement attempted to find out if Timothy or Jessica Griffith had been on medications for mental illness, but the warrant returned no prescription history for either for the past 10 years." (from https://www.heraldextra.com/news/local/south/mapleton/mapleton-murder-suicide-may-have-been-planned-by-parents-court/article_2a2e3baa-5508-5e09-ad2c-38a5e0949a2f.html)

Assuming there was no prescription history for the past ten years, how could she have been convinced she had ovarian cancer or been doctor shopping as someone else suggested? I know when I visit the doctor for just about anything, I get some type of prescription. I still think she may have been convinced she had ovarian cancer due to severe mental illness, but I find it hard to believe she was visiting medical professionals for her symptoms given no prescription history.

It sounds like she wanted to hide her role and frame him as being completely responsible. To me that just doesn't add up to her believing that she was dying.

"Police, however, concluded in their final report that even after planning the murders and buying sleeping pills with her husband, "Jessica then attempts to hide her involvement by deleting text messages and emailing her family saying she feels she and the kids are in danger and Timothy is acting weird.""
