This is the Babcock murder trial discussion thread.

A few general reminders about the trial:

Any testimony that might remain under Publication Ban, and/or any courtroom discussion that takes place when the jury is not present, is strictly off-limits.

Only testimony that is published through MSM reporting (newspaper articles, tweets, tv) is allowed. Provide a source link, and keep discussion focused on testimony as it becomes public knowledge.

The magnificent principle of “innocent until proven guilty” is for the court room … it is not required that the general public / Websleuths members adhere to that principle. Members are allowed to discuss, speculate, theorize, and judge according to opinions they develop from following the specifics of the case.

A few general reminders from Websleuths TOS aka The Rules.

At all times, remain VICTIM FRIENDLY. No bashing or passing judgment on the victim or family.

There is ZERO TOLERANCE for snarky or disrespectful posts. Don’t expect an explanation … you will find your post has simply disappeared, or that you can no longer post.

There is to be NO name calling or name variations, not even of the accused.

BICKERING between members is not allowed. If you disagree, that's fine, say so and move past the post. If a post is offensive, alert it and let the Mods review it. If you respond to the post, both the offensive post AND yours will be removed and may result in other consequences.

Alert on a post and move on without discussing it, and don't question the decisions of our Mods/Admin or Owner. Also do not expect personalized responses with explanations about a particular decision.

Do not abuse the WS Alert feature. Abuse includes, but is not limited to:
• Overuse of the alert system
• Repeatedly alerting on the same poster
• Demanding a specific outcome
• Alerting on the same post more than once

'A funny smell, like rotting': Accused killer Dellen Millard's mechanic testifies about incinerators
By Shannon Martin, CBC News Nov 14, 2017

Accused killer Dellen Millard's former mechanic told a jury on Wednesday he saw ash, and something that looked like bones, inside in his boss' animal incinerator — a heavy-duty piece of farm machinery the Crown alleges was used to burn Laura Babcock's body after she was killed.

The mechanic, Shane Schlatman, spent all day in the witness box, and testified about more than what he saw in late July 2012 when he stopped by Millard's farm in the Waterloo, Ont. region, to fill the incinerator's propane tank.

There was a smell too.

"I could smell a funny smell. Like rotting. Not nice. There was stuff inside of it," he told the jury as Babcock's murder trial continued in Ontario Superior Court.

Accused killer Dellen Millard to face his former mechanic at Laura Babcock murder trial
By Shannon Martin, CBC News Nov 16, 2017

Accused killer Dellen Millard will once again face his former mechanic as his cross-examination continues in a downtown Toronto courtroom Thursday.

Shane Schlatman, 45, told the jury at the Laura Babcock murder trial on Wednesday he saw ash and something that looked like bone in Millard's animal incinerator in late July 2012.

The Crown alleges the incinerator, called "The Eliminator," was used to burn Babcock's body after she was killed in early July 2012.

The trial continues at 10 a.m. ET.

The first two posts on this thread has Shannon Martin stating it was July 2012. Not sure what to think. I know the dead dear text from DM was on Aug 28th.

Yes, it’s very confusing for us readers... They need to clear this up as it’s an important occurance.

We are just waiting on Justice Michael Code and the jury. Should be any moment now.

wasn't the first visit SS alluded to in order get the generator from the barn? and the August one to refill propane? According to tweets it seems SS said he smelled something bad on the first visit...then seemed to agree with lawyer that it was August he smelled it...maybe he honestly doesn't remember? or maybe it's not clear to reporters?

Millard is now asking Schlatman about his instructions to build a trailer for the incinerator. "To set up the incinerator to only use at my farm would have been way easier," #Millard says, and Schlatman agrees. "Way easier." #LauraBabcock

Dellen Millard begins - asking Shane Schlatman about the purpose of the incinerator.

"Have you heard about a roll out door versus a hatch on the incinerator?" Millard asks.

Schlatman says he remembers reading the option in an email from the manufacturer.

The jury has already seen the emails about buying the incinerator, Schlatman agrees. "Do you remember explaining to me what the roll door was?" Schlatman says he does not. What does he think it is? SS thinks it would be like a garage door. #LauraBabcock

Schlatman says the roll top door would be similar to a garage door, you'd slide it upward.

Millard says "The roll up door would've allowed for larger objects to get in?"

Schlatman says it's possible.

Millard responds, that they didn't opt for the roll up door.

Millard suggests that it would have been easier to just set incinerator up in barn and not bother mounting it on a trailer.

If any modifications were made to the quote for the incinerator, it would be because #Millard ordered it so. Schlatman agrees. "We've heard about garbage... and about pet cremation as well," #Millard reminds him about reasons given for buying incinerator.

Millard switches gears to the idea that he wanted to start a pet cremation business, with his uncle.

Millard: "The idea was he could be a potential customer for this machine, in addition to many other vet clinics and the use of garbage?"

Schlatman: "That's right" though he doesn't think the machine was designed to burn garbage.

Millard talks about how the plan included potentially going to farms in the Waterloo-area, also looking to drum up business.

Millard wonders if Schlatman knows what Millard's relationship with his uncle was like? Schlatman isn't sure. It wasn't that his uncle would be a partner in the pet cremation business, but a potential customer. Schlatman agrees. #LauraBabcock
