NEW YORK - Al Lewis, the cigar-chomping patriarch of "The Munsters" whose work as a basketball scout, restaurateur and political candidate never eclipsed his role as Grandpa from the television sitcom, died after years of failing health. He was 95.

he was such a character, I really liked him :(

I had already thought he was dead. My mistake. That's too bad he passed. I enjoyed him on the Munsters.

Many of the news sources (CNN for example) are listing him as 82 which is ridiculous because that would have made him only 41 when he began his role as Grandpa Munster in 1964.

IMDB say that he was born in 1910

What a character he was. Thanks, Al Lewis, for making me laugh and showing me a mischievous side of grandparents!

Well, some actors look old early in life, like Walter Brennan, who was playing 60 at 30. He was also in CAR 54 (also with Ed Gwinn) before the Munsters.
