In search of those gone missing, the heart is a lonely hunter

SEATTLE - Stephanie Fullerton walks through icy drizzle to place a vase of fresh flowers at her family's burial plot in a corner of Queen Anne's Mount Pleasant Cemetery. She positions the remembrance just below the markers of her parents, Lynn and Pauline, and just above one recognizing her brother, Michael Frank Fullerton.

His marker reads 1960-1990, but the grave is empty. He went missing in 1986, when he was 26. The family settled on the ending date out of deference to his mother. Seeking resolution and recognition for her vanished son was one of her final wishes before she died in 1990.

"During one of the last moments in her final days, she told me, 'Don't worry about Michael. He is OK,'" recalls Fullerton, wrapped in a black coat and scarf, her face chilled red. "I always thought that at some point that marker would have been raised so something, even a set of teeth, could be placed inside."

While presuming death, Stephanie and her sisters still wonder and wait for answers. When she hears about "human remains" being found, she calls the medical examiner to see if they match Michael. Other families do that for their missing loved ones, too.

She is the cemetery's lone visitor on a weekday morning, alone with the near-20-year-old question. People like her feel lonely with their open-ended mysteries, yet she allows herself a melancholy chuckle. "Maybe Nancy Grace will get interested," she says of the cable-news commentator. "Michael was good-looking."

Michael on left, John Doe on right

Unidentified White Male

* Skeletal Remains

Vital Statistics

* Estimated age: 25 - 40 years old
* Approximate Height and Weight: 5'4"
* Distinguishing Characteristics: Healed fracture of right scaphoid may have involved the use of the short - arm thumb
* Dentals: Available. 1-13-16 teeth missing antimortem.

Case History
The victim's bones were found by a dredging crew at the edge of the Everglades near the Tamiami Trail and 144th Avenue in April 2003.
Police believe he was murdered and his bodied dumped, perhaps as many as 25 years ago. He may have been in the often-violent cocaine wars that marked the early 1980s.

Possible match?:
1. There is a resemblence between the photo of Michael and the reconstruction of John Doe.
2. Michael was 26 when he went missing, John Doe is estimated to be 25-40.
3. There is no mention of dental history for Michael, nor any injury so no comparison can be done.
4. Michael is listed as 6'2" and John Doe is listed as 5'4" <<Huge descrepancy.
5. John Doe is estimated to have died up to 1978.
6. There is no mention of John Doe's hair color.
7. Michael went missing from Washington State, and John Doe was found in Florida. If Michael was on the run from a drug dealer perhaps he ended up in Florida?

**Since John Doe's body was found by a dredging crew perhaps they didn't recover enough to make the height estimate accurate? The height descrepancy puts this possible match into doubt.

Michael's sister was speaking in the above quote. Michael's empty grave is next to their parents graves. His Mother died while he has been missing.

Bump

This month marks 24 years that Michael has been missing. Come home soon.

The location of Michael's vehicle is interesting. Capitol Hill is, among other things, the longstanding locus of gay culture in Seattle. Since time immemorial there has been a cluster of gay-friendly businesses along Pike between Broadway and 14th. It's possible his vehicle was found in north Capitol Hill --the 'fancy' part of the neighborhood-- but if it was found anywhere near the southern fringes of the neighborhood where it abuts the Central District it's possible he may have been a victim of anti-gay violence. 1986 was the height of the AIDS epidemic, only a year before the first noted use of the 'Gay Panic defense' in the USA: a time when the gay community was gripped in fear, paranoia, and still occluded in social approbation.

Clearly I don't mean to disparage Michael in any of these suggestions, born of ignorant speculation as they may be. The location of his car just caught my eye and I thought I'd throw in my $0.02-worth as a current and longtime Seattleite.

I have the impression that either he had something with drugs, a woman with a husband and with him it was a love triangle... it could also be a robbery but in that case his car would not have been found... I don't think it was an evil man... at least he was left with his mother on a plaque that remembers him as having died in 1990... there is very little information about him...
either way
rest in peace
