BREAKING: Melbourne CBD is in chaos after at least 16 people, including a child, were rammed by a car outside Flinders St station.

AT least 16 people have been struck by a four-wheel-drive in the centre of Melbourne.

“A preschool-aged child with a head injury has been taken to Royal Children’s Hospital in a serious condition. There are no further details on injuries or conditions at this time.”
Police have arrested the driver of the car.

Witnesses have described horrific scenes of “people are flying everywhere” as the carnage unfolded at the corner of Elizabeth Street and Flinders Street at 4.41pm this afternoon.

The vehicle ran a red light just after 4.30pm, witnesses have told 3AW.

“He has gone straight through the red light at pace and it was bang, bang, bang. It was just one after the other.

The last bang the car stopped,” the 20-year-old said. ”There were bodies on the ground and people running up to them — it was mayhem.

Seems like it:

7:06 pm

‘Commander Russell Barrett from Victoria Police has just spoken to the media about the incident.

He said that police believe it was a deliberate act but added that "we do not know the motivation and it is still in the early stages of an investigation."

He requested that people avoid the area as a crime scene will be in place for a "considerable" period of time.

When asked if terror was a possible motivation, he said it was still too early to establish motivation.

He said that no charges have been laid as yet against the two men.’

.@AhronYoung: 'Upon my observation of pictures of this man, I would say he is of middle-eastern appearance, between 30 and 35 years of age, with a beard, in a white-chequered shirt and wearing jeans. He is being interviewed by police and detectives' MORE: http://bit.ly/2BJyq2E

It's so upsetting this is happening in Melbourne again.

The Guardian is reporting the vehicle reached pedestrians about six or seven seconds after pedestrians were given the green light to cross the road. https://twitter.com/GuardianAus/status/943771096574316545
