Why the Oil Tanker Explosion Would Be Such a Huge Disaster
The ship was carrying a form of oil called condensate—here's what it could mean for the environment.

"An oil tanker carrying 150,000 tons, nearly a million barrels, of a highly combustible substance called condensate caught fire Saturday. The tanker, named SANCHI, flies under a Panamanian flag and weighs more than 85,000 tons, according to the site Maritime Traffic. A statement from the Chinese government reports that the ship was transporting oil-based condensate to South Korea for National Iranian Oil Company subsidiary Bright Shipping Limited."

East China Sea oil tanker burns for third day as winds, high waves lash rescuers

"BEIJING/SEOUL (Reuters) - Strong winds, high waves and toxic gases are hindering dozens of rescue boats struggling to locate missing sailors from a stricken oil tanker in the East China Sea and to extinguish a fire that has burned for the past three days on the ship."

this is bad bad bad IMO.

Too bad so many people are stuck to their phones and SM world to care. Like the crisis with bees. <off Soapbox>

A giant oil tanker is on fire and could explode in the East China Sea
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...ire-and-could-explode-in-the-south-china-sea/

"Since the crash, the Sanchi has been billowing thick plumes of black smoke into the air. Unless the fire can be brought under control, officials worry that the ship might explode and sink, releasing its 1 million barrels of oil into the water.

The resulting spill would be about three times as big as the Exxon Valdez spill of 1989, one of the worst environmental disasters in history. It would double what the Prestige oil tanker released when it sank off the coast of Spain in 2002. That accident damaged beaches in France, Spain and Portugal, and led to the closure of one of Spain's richest fishing areas."

"The Sanchi was transporting oil from Iran to South Korea on Saturday when it ran into the CF Crystal, a Hong Kong-registered ship carrying grain from the United States. The crash*occurred*about 160 miles off the coast of Shanghai and near the mouth of the Yangtze River. The cause remains unknown.

Experts are especially worried because the ship is carrying condensate, an ultralight version of crude oil.*Condensate is highly toxic and even more combustible than regular crude oil. It also is nearly colorless and odorless, which makes it difficult to detect."

(Don't get me staaaarted on the BP Oil Spill and the "COREXIT" (cockroach spray) they crop dusted the ocean with and pumped into the seabed, contaminating everything from the plankton on down. :( :( :( )

"An oil leak into the East China Sea could also have a serious effect on the waterfront's wildlife.

If the ship does not sink, the environmental impact would be much more limited.*The Chinese government said it has not found evidence of a "large-scale" oil leak. Much of the oil — between 40 percent and 70 percent — would probably evaporate in hours. Of course, if those fumes drift toward towns and cities, they could aggravate existing health conditions or lead to coughing and asthma."

Iranian oil tanker burning for third day, may explode as crew still missing
http://www.foxnews.com/world/2018/0...rd-day-may-explode-as-crew-still-missing.html

"A stricken Iranian oil tanker continued to burn out of control for a third day in the East China Sea as rescue boats struggled Tuesday to locate missing sailors before the vessel explodes.

The tanker Sanchi, run by Iran’s top oil shipping operator, has been on fire since late Saturday night, when it hit a freight ship about 160 miles off the coast of Shanghai, burst into flames and began spilling oil into the sea.

“We can’t grasp the level of oil contamination at this moment," Park Sung-dong, an official from South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, told Reuters. "The cargo is still on fire, so it is hard to figure out if oil is being spilled.""

"The tanker was carrying nearly 1 million barrels of condensate, a type of gassy, ultra-light oil, when it collided with the Hong Kong-registered freighter CF Crystal, which was carrying grain from the United States. All 21 crew members of the Crystal were rescued, the Chinese ministry said. The Crystal's crew members were all Chinese nationals."

"With a length of 900 feet (274 meters) and displacing more than 85,000 tons, the Sanchi is almost as big as the US Navy's Nimitz-class aircraft carriers, according to the ship-tracking sitemarinetraffic.com.

Iran's Shana news agency reported that the Sanchi was managed by the National Iranian Tanker Company and that its cargo was worth around $60 million. Shana said the oil had been purchased by South Korean customers."

Crew Aboard Blazing Iranian Oil Tanker May Be Alive, Owner Says
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...ng-iranian-oil-tanker-may-be-alive-owner-says

Omggg

:gasp:

"The crew of an Iranian oil tanker set ablaze at the weekend following a collision could still be alive, the vessel’s owner said, calling on the Chinese authorities working at the scene to prioritize a rescue attempt.

“We are still hopeful,” Captain Mohsen Bahrami, a spokesman for the Sanchi rescue committee at the National Iranian Tanker Co., said in an interview in Tehran Wednesday. “We are still hopeful that in the engine room at least some people have taken shelter and are waiting to be rescued.""

******

Gosh, I'll never forget that thread here, when the students on Spring Break (Thailand was it) sunk...or maybe it was another one...they found them deceased, clawing marks on the inside of the boat....:( )

What a miracle if these guys can be rescued.

Sigh, I'm such a bleeding heart for Marine Life...this is really hard to watch...

Our world has become so contaminated....everything, our food, our water, our air, our soil...

:(
