Teacher handcuffed at school board meeting 'appalled' that her 'voice was silenced'

http://abcnews.go.com/US/teachers-h...table-raises-constitutional/story?id=52256738

"I planned to hear concerns or watch a vote take place about the superintendent's contract," Deyshia Hargrave, an English language arts teacher at Rene A. Rost Middle School in Kaplan, Louisiana, recounted in a Facebook video posted by Louisiana Association of Educators today. "My voice was silenced during audience concerns for the superintendent. By silencing my voice, they've also taken away, or tried to take away, my first amendment right to speak. And I'm appalled at this and you should be too."

No wonder why the education system is messed up.

LAFAYETTE, La. — A day after a Louisiana teacher was handcuffed and forcibly removed from a school board meeting for questioning the superintendent's pay raise, the school board received death threats, the board president said Tuesday.

Officer central to Vermilion Parish teacher arrest has been sued before for excessive force

The deputy marshal who arrested a Vermilion Parish teacher during a school board meeting has already been sued at least once for excessive force.

A federal lawsuit alleges that when the officer worked for the Scott Police Department, a 62-year-old man accused him and another officer of shoving him against a building and slamming his head on a concrete slab.

The force caused a fractured rib and a head wound that required six staples, according to the lawsuit.

VERMILION PARISH, La. -
Many in Vermilion Parish are getting death threats over the arrest of middle school teacher Deyshia Hargrave, including the parish's superintendent, Jerome Puyau.

Puyau is pleading for death threats against himself, his family and others in the school system to stop.

"Leave our communities out and our schools.. just stay away," begs Puyau.

Despite the threats and overwhelming outrage, Puyau stands by the officer who escorted Hargrave out of the building in handcuffs.

"Our people know what to do, and when it happened, that person, that marshal acted in what we asked him to do," said the Vermilion Parish superintendent.

Vermilion Parish teacher's arrest raises questions of gender inequality

http://www.katc.com/story/37239387/...-arrest-raises-questions-of-gender-inequality

"I have never seen a man removed from this room," Laura LeBouef, a Vermilion Parish school board member, said after the arrest.

Along with LeBouef, some have implied that Hargrave may have been targeted because she's a woman.

On the topic of gender, Fontana is now facing even more criticism over an interview concerning Hargrave's arrest.

"Everybody wants to side on the poor little woman who got thrown out," Fontana told WAFB during a phone interview. "Well, she made a choice. She could have walked out and nothing would have happened."

President of the Louisiana Association of Educators, Debbie Meaux, disagrees with Fontana. "This didn't have to happen to this 'little woman' as he calls her, but her name is Deyshia Hargrove".

I still can't figure out why she was arrested. She did walk out and was arrested in the hallway and forced to the ground.

I'm glad you started this thread. I wanted to last night, but couldnt. I have so many thoughts about this whole situation. I need to let them marinate for a day or two so it's not just a big mess of thoughts. But, I'm ready for this society to stop letting a little group of people sit around and make decisions that are beneficial for only thise sitting there. And I am ready for schools to take back their power and their purpose ---- to teach for knowledge and a love of learning, not for a test score. Enough already. Really.

She was interviewed on the Today show today. The question is, if teachers or community members are not allowed to ask questions or express concerns about things the school board is voting on that day, then when is appropriate? They said it wasn't the time or place. Ok.... well, then when is the right time and place? How do we have access to those who vote? I have a feeling that's a rhetorical question. There is no real answer. They do what they want. No one should ask questions.

And all of this happened in front of small children -handcuffing the teacher and the excessive force used- what kind of example is that setting? I watched the video this afternoon -and I signed the petition which is circulating online- and it is shocking.

Those superintendents made wads already"...............I would question a pay rise like that too !

They had a rally today with her speaking. I hope (and she hopes) that this is a catalyst to women, teachers, PEOPLE being heard and not silenced/ arrested.

This young lady is absolutely right! Right is Right, and this is not right! I stand by her! This is one time social media will act in a positive way. Power to you Deyshia Hargrave; you have many behind you.

AG FILES SUIT OVER REMOVAL OF VERMILION TEACHER FROM MEETING

http://kpel965.com/ag-files-suit-over-removal-of-vermilion-teacher-from-board-meeting/

Landry's suit says the school board conducted the meeting "in an atmosphere that was hostile toward and contemptuous of" parish residents who attended it.

"Every community has a stake in the performance and the governance of its public schools, and the community's views and thoughts should be taken into account before any action or discussion on an agenda item occurs," the suit says."

Vermilion Parish School Board violated Open Meeting law when it ejected teacher, judge rules

The judge ruled that the School Board wrongly silenced Hargrave and that the teacher was not being “willfully disruptive,” the legal threshold for removing someone from a public meeting in Louisiana.

“Ms. Hargrave addressed the board respectfully,” Smith said in his ruling. “She was not loud or disruptive.”

Smith also ordered the board from now on to “strictly adhere” to both the state Open Meetings Law and its own policy on public comments.

Uh huh. And what consequences happened to them? Nothing? There is no deterrent for them to act any way other than how they want. After having to deal with government officials for a community issue lately, it is so clear to me now. These officials exert unlawful power. And when (or more.like IF) they are called.out, they have zero consequences. Until we start holding our officials accountable and atop treating publicense office as a license to do and say as you please for your own gain, we are in big trouble. Big. Had this not been on video, no one would have believed she was respectful and not unruly.
