PORTLAND, Ore. – An Oregon Air National Guard Sergeant is missing, and family and longtime friends and colleagues say it is not like him to disappear.

Martin Nance, 49, is listed as missing on the national database. The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office has a case open, but they say they can't do much because there's no evidence he's in imminent danger. And there are no signs of foul play.

So others are searching, including many fellow air guard members.

In semi-retirement, Sgt. Nance has been driving for Lyft. Family believes he left his car at Southeast 17th Avenue and Miller Street sometime Saturday.

But they don't know why.

Nor do they know why he failed to show up for guard drill on Sunday, missing it for the first time in 30 years. Those unanswered questions have his wing commander and loved ones alike very concerned.

Lisa Veber said her brother is dependable and not at all likely to disappear for no reason.

If you have any information about Nance’s whereabouts or if you see him, please call the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office.

On Tuesday, Nance’s car was found in the Sellwood neighborhood. Verber said her brother’s phone was found inside the car.

That area is densely populated with tons of businesses and extremely safe.

Super weird location for someone to go missing either voluntarily or otherwise.

Friends, family and strangers gathered Sunday morning to search for an Oregon Air National Guardsman who no one has heard from since Jan. 6.

The crowd canvassed the area around Sellwood for hours Sunday, looking for Marty Nance. Family say Nance has been with the national guard for 32 years. They say his disappearance is out of character.

We don't know how he went away, Was he forced away? Did he do it willingly? The only thing I do know is that in the 32 years of being an Air National Guard member, he has never missed a drill weekend, and he missed his weekend,” said Lisa Veber, Nance’s sister.

Nance’s car was found last Saturday in Sellwood with his cell phone still inside.

“This is alarming. He was a creature of habit. He had things he did every day. He had routines. To just not show up when he knows to show up is alarming. It tells me that something is horribly wrong,” Veber said.
Roughly 75 people gathered Sunday to help search for the missing man. They walked through neighborhoods, parks, and near Oaks Park, hoping to turn up clues. They passed out fliers and spoke with passersby to spread the word.

“Marty is one of those rock-solid guys who'd do anything for anyone,” said Reuben Schug, a friend and fraternity brother.
The search party split up into several groups to cover more ground. Schug led one of those groups searching near Oaks Park.
Clackamas County Deputies confirmed with KATU News that they have a missing person report for Nance.

“At this time we have received no information to lead us to believe Mr. Nance is in danger. We have asked all reporting parties to contact us immediately if they discover anything that leads them to believe Mr. Nance is in danger,” a sheriff’s office spokesperson told KATU News.

It sounds as though they will hopefully find surveillance video from the area that may give them clues??

I live in Clackamas county, super close to this area. I have driven past this area a lot, but not that Saturday. There are subdivisions and businesses around there, some road construction this winter. Lots of cars use SE McLoughlin Blvd to commute downtown to work, which is just east of where his car was found. But hes also not that far from where you cross the Sellwood bridge, which can also get you downtown. No place to really wander off without being seen by someone. Was he working for Lyft Saturday? Was he picking someone up or dropping someone off? Lots of bikers(not motorcycles) and walkers in this area. Strange he left his phone in his car. But my phone is also my wallet, so I would automatically grab for it.

“His friends say they found his rental car in Portland’s Sellwood neighborhood; his cell phone was lying on a seat.”

This is the first time I’m hearing Marty was driving s rental ....

ETA: Marty’s sister, who has also been quoted in MSM articles, appears to be the one administering the page.

The first post in the thread says he had been driving for Lyft. I wonder if the reporter is getting details mixed up when say "rental car" or does that mean he rented the car he used to transport people for Lyft?

Very little details about this case. Was Martin driving for Lyft on Saturday and if so can the family or LE get his diving records for that day. Same is true for his phone call records and pinging records. It seems that LE hands are tied since there is no evidence of foul play therefore no search warrant.

Martin's sister, Lisa Verber, has reported on Help Find Marty FB page that there was a possible sighting of Martin in Seattle by two Seattle police officers but can't confirm it because of redtape issues with Clackamas Co. Sheriff Dept. in getting information from Seattle PD.

To be honest if I was the sister, I would be going crazy with LE. Can she get into his home computer, his emails, or into his phone? If the police have the phone and are not doing anything with it I would demand it back. With the length of time of no contact there is clearly something very wrong here, whatever it is, illness, accident, hate to say it but possibly suicide? Who are his close friends, partners, ex-partners, was he on any dating sites? Seems to be a river park in Sellwood, that also worries me.

Perhaps the relatives need to press on "duty of care" type issues. Employers surely have to by law check on the safety of their employees, they need to go to a senior person at Lyft, pointing out how bad it will look for them if something bad has happened and they did not assist. Also Marty has military connections, surely someone there can get in touch with a senior person there who can put pressure on LE, or have authority to investigate themselves.

It seems that Martin's sister is doing everything possible to find her brother but runs into obstacles or doesn't have the expertise to get critical information. The most important information would be employer, phone, or computer records which seems to be problem at this time.

If Martin was spotted in Seattle does he have any contacts in that area.

Martin’s sister posted on the Help Find Martin Nance FB page she watched the video, and the potential sighting in Seattle was not Martin ...:
https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1754148894629153&id=1736771349700241

She also reports she will be contacting a PI to see what options he might have that LE don’t, investigatively. She wants to have his phone unlocked somehow.

My gut-feeling is that Martin is nearby, possibly in a body of water. I really hope that I am wrong ....

My gut feeling is the same.

BUT you'd think if that was the case he would have been found by now unless he was in the Willamette.

And if he was headed to the Willamette he parked in a very strange spot. If I have the car location correct, the Willamette is definitely within walking distance from there, but not exactly close. By roads like half a mile or further, and most of the road distance between would be easier to find parking on than where his car ended up.

I looked at a map and I wonder about that huge "pond" looking thing that seems to be branched off the river a few blocks from where the car was found.

OT but it's really weird, I grew up not exactly in that neighborhood but very close by (both my dad and sister still live within 5 miles of there in two different directions) and I never had a clue that pond thing was there, so I have no idea what it looks like or what the deal with it is.

The location where the car was found is indeed odd:

In Google Street View, it appears to be a residential neighborhood:

According to Google Maps, it is 1.1 miles or a 22-minute walk from where the car was found to the Sellwood Bridge:

I fear that Martin is in the Willamette, due to the car’s proximity to the river = Sellwood Bridge.

As to why he wouldn’t park closer to the river, it’s difficult to tell, especially if he was suicidal. Perhaps his wish was his loved ones never find out he took his own life, so he left the car somewhere close enough that he could walk to the bridge, but not so close that it would be obvious that he jumped?

As to “that huge ‘pond’ looking thing that seems to be branched off the river a few blocks from where the car was found,” it appears to be a pond that is part of Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge:
