Sophie, a 13-year-old yellow Labrador retriever, went out with her family who were plowing and shoveling, where she wandered off and hadn’t come back. As the days went on and temperatures plummeted to record lows, the family reportedly became disheartened.

The family continued searching on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They had begun to lose hope until Sophie’s head was spotted poking out from the snow on Tuesday morning, just down the road from their home. Sophie had been completely buried and stuck in a yard in an area the family had already checked.

Sophie spent five days out in extreme cold and winds. The family thanked a man who he says used a tractor to plow a path to Sophie and rescue her.

Sophie was taken to a veterinarian and is OK. “No frostbite, lost 5 pounds, hungry and tired,” he wrote. “Blood work and X-rays all showed a healthy girl.”

The family called the discovery of Sophie a “miracle.”

So glad the old gal came out okay. It must have been quite an experience, I'm surprised she survived. Where I lived a long time ago, sometimes in the thaw they would find the body of a snowmobiler plowed into the steep snowbanks. There's a lot of danger where there's a lot of ice and snow, more than most people imagine. Keep an eye out for your pets in bad weather.

I adore dogs. Reading news like this make my day :beagle:

I image her body heat encased in the snow is what kept her alive, perhaps she dug around a bit and was able to make an igloo. When the temps plummeted and the snow froze, she must've stayed put until temps rose and she was able to break through the snow and ice? I dunno, for an old dog, she is amazing. :heartbeat:
