Police say that a newborn baby boy has been rushed to hospital after it was found abandoned outside a building in North York amid frigid temperatures.

The baby, described by police as “days, if not weeks old,” was discovered by a couple at the rear of a plaza near Keele Street and Lawrence Avenue at around 11 a.m.
The temperature was sitting at about –6 C at the time the baby was found, though it felt closer to –10 with the wind child.
According to paramedics, the baby is in serious but stable condition and is currently being taken to hospital via emergency run.

Poor little guy, found barely an hour ago- hope he makes it, they do not know how long he has been there.

Police say the infant boy was discovered behind a plaza on Redberry Parkway around 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

The baby appears to have been left outside, with temperatures in the -6 range. It is unclear how long the child had been outside.

Oh gosh, wondering how the mom is doing? rbbm.

It appeared that the baby was born in a covered outdoor walkway in the shopping plaza less than an hour before police were called. The shopping area is located at the southeast corner of Keele and Lawrence.

Sgt. Kevin Kaposy said information about what had happened was "very fluid."

"The last information is that the baby was crying at the hospital. And now we are concerned about the mother," he said.

"This is the kind of call that is a nightmare for police," said Const. David Hopkinson, who said officers will soon begin looking for witnesses and video evidence to try to determine what happened.

I saw this on the news. That poor baby. Let's hope mom's safe and just being a jerk.
I wish I could snuggle baby.

Police lead a woman out of a home on Redeberry Parkway prior to placing her in the back of an awaiting ambulance on Thursday. Police were in the area investigating reports of a baby abandonment behind a nearby plaza.

A woman who gave birth to a baby in a North York home on Tuesday morning fabricated a story about finding it abandoned behind a nearby plaza, a police source tells CP24.

Police initially said that the baby boy was spotted by a couple in a covered walkway behind a plaza near Keele Street and Lawrence Avenue at around 11 a.m.

Police said they were told the couple placed the baby in a hoodie and took him to a nearby home before calling 9-1-1.

According to the police source that spoke with CP24, investigators have determined that the baby’s mother had kept her pregnancy a secret from her family and gave birth to the baby alone inside a home on Redberry Parkway on Tuesday morning.

The source said the woman, believed to be under the age of 20, called police as soon as she gave birth and made up the story about finding the baby behind the plaza.

The baby, which still had his umbilical cord, was taken to hospital via emergency run and was initially listed in serious but stable condition, though his condition was later downgraded to critical. The source told CP24 that it is their understanding that the woman received no medical care throughout her pregnancy

TORONTO — Her family here in Canada and her mom and dad back home in Korea didn’t know.

And she didn’t want them to know.

But early on this cold Jan. 16, the unusual birth of her baby boy meant what she was hiding was no longer easy to conceal.

By sundown, this young Korean woman’s secret was out for the whole country to see.

“We had no idea,” said a woman in a home in the Lawrence Ave.-Keele St. area, who described the new mom as her niece. “We didn’t notice she was pregnant".
The 19-year-old came to stay with them in September but has not always been at the home.
“She has been to Quebec and other places,” said the woman. “We work. We don’t always talk to her. She came here four months ago to visit and to take English classes.”
But first things first. How is the baby?

“The police told us the baby is in stable condition,” said the relative.

They were planning to go to Humber River Hospital to visit both the infant and his mom.

No charges.
Why not? Is it not still abandonment if the person that abandons later retrieves a child? What about endangerment?
I don't get it.

Thinking that maybe the mother did not in fact give birth outside, abandoning the baby in the cold- but just said that to explain why she had a baby in her possession..
Speculation, imo.

Yes, and she called the police right after giving birth. The baby is fine and there doesn't seem to be any evidence that the baby was ever outside. The mom will live with the social repercussions of her decision to lie about the birth. I just hope that the child has a safe and happy home.
