Does anyone happen to know the crime rates in that area (Avenham Park)?

Police are especially keen to speak to two people who Michael’s friend says walked past him near the gazebo in the park at around the time Michael went missing at about 2am.

Officers, with the support of teams from the North West Police Underwater Search and Marine Unit, the Environment Agency, Coastguard, Lancashire Fire and Rescue and regional police helicopter units, have carried out a number of searches in the Riversway, Avenham and Fishergate Hill areas since Michael went missing.

Friends and family of Michael Brooks have been searching Avenham Park throughout the weekend.

Detective Inspector Graeme Simpson, of South CID, said: “We remain extremely concerned for Michael who has now been missing for more than a week.

“Officers, with the support of specialist teams from the region, have conducted searches across the area Michael was last seen and we remain hopeful of finding him.

Hmmmm...something very suspicious about this I’d say!
I’d got it into my head that maybe they were drunk having been out in town clubbing, M had walked off home through the park and ended up in a body of water.
Wonder what they were doing going out at 1.05am?
I also wonder if the friend he was with was actually a friend IYGWIM and reading between the lines.

Michael Brooks went missing in the early hours of Sunday, January 14 and is believed to have made his way to Avenham Park and then into Miller Park. The last confirmed sighting of the 19-year-old former Preston’s College student is on CCTV on Glover’s Court at about 1:20am. Michael’s mum, who currently lives in Liverpool, says she believes her son’s love of nature led him to go to Avenham Park as he enjoys stargazing.

Michael moved to Preston with his mum and siblings when he was nine and grew up in the city and attended Moorbrook School for children with social and emotional difficulties in Fulwood. When he was 16 he moved to Preston’s College, where he studied IT, but left early and was looking for a job at the time of his disappearance.

So this lad and his friend are walking through the park and two people may have walked past and they became separated. So when did the friend raise the alarm? There must be something I am not getting here, surely the friend knows if the people walked past them or not?

There seem to be some very strange "friends" around. I do not feel this will have a happy ending somehow.

You’d think so wouldn’t you?
There is definitely something odd going on.

Just reading through this link again and the bit, about “social and emotional difficulties”, stands out to me as well as the fact that shortly before he disappeared, he’d dropped out of college.
Maybe his mental state was on a decline or maybe he just picked an argument with the wrong person. Social and emotional difficulties cover a broad range of issues so IDK

I think you're probably right.
Unfortunately

It sounds like a euphemism for autism, though obviously I could be wide of the mark.
