Deadwood Police still searching for missing Spearfish man

Deadwood Police Chief Kelly Fuller said law enforcement officers continue to follow up on leads coming in regarding a Spearfish man who went missing over the weekend.

Following a grid search involving several local law enforcement departments, Christopher Oien’s whereabouts are still unknown.

Oien, 28, had recently moved to Spearfish and reportedly went to Deadwood for the weekend, but never stayed in his hotel room, prompting a welfare check Monday evening and a missing person’s report filed with the Deadwood Police Department Tuesday.

Fuller said that initial reports received from the cell phone company were inaccurate. Instead of pinging near Box Elder, the phone actually pinged within Deadwood city limits, a half-mile from the cell phone tower near town.

“We conducted a thorough search of the area, which didn’t produce anything,” Fuller said. “We were able to identify a hot zone in Deadwood and his cell phone had pinged from that tower.”

Fuller said the challenge is that the cell phone company can’t give an exact location, so a half-mile radius was drawn on the map and the Deadwood Police Department was joined by Lawrence County Sherriff’s Office, the Lawrence County Search & Rescue, the Lead Fire Department and the Deadwood Fire Department.

“We did an extensive grid search of the area and were unable to turn up anything,” Fuller said.

Lt. Kenneth Mertens of the Deadwood Police Department was advised Oien went to Deadwood over the weekend and had a hotel room at the Bullock Hotel.

“A welfare check was done by his friends last night, and housekeeping said that he had never stayed in his room,” Mertens said Tuesday.

Oien was last seen Sunday night wearing a lightweight black and blue jacket with a hoodie underneath, baseball cap, and jeans. He is 6 feet tall, weighs 155 pounds, and has strawberry blond hair and blue eyes.

Mertens said Oien drove his friend’s vehicle to Deadwood. The vehicle was relocated behind Oyster Bay sometime Monday and taken back by the friend prior to the missing person’s report being filed.

We’re making every effort to locate Chris,” Fuller said. “We’re still actively working the case.”

Fuller said that at this point, there is no evidence of foul play and it is not suspected as of yet.

“We hope to find him. We hope he is safe somewhere,” Fuller said.

by vehicle do they mean the motocross dirt bike on his facebook page?

Spearfish to Deadwood is only about a 20 min drive... strange he would rent a motel/hotel room?? Definitely info into circumstances of his disappearance being left out...IMO.

I wonder if that is a casino? I know alot of people will rent a room at a casino if they plan on staying to gamble/drink all night, the don't have to worry about driving home. I believe Deadwood is the Las Vegas of South Dakota.

Deadwood is better then Vegas, to me.
Original western atmosphere.
Not over the top, trendy, glitzy, or showy.

Deadwood police continue to track down leads in the case of a missing Spearfish man, but those tips are “all over the map.”

Christopher Oien, 28, who went missing Jan. 13, was last seen around 1:44 a.m. in a video taken from the welcome center in Deadwood. Oien was on video walking up Volin Street up toward Williams Street.

Minutes before, Oien was seen on the roof of the Deadwood Gulch Saloon. Oien jumped from the roof, a 15- to 20-foot drop, got up and “appeared as though he was running from something.” He ran along the Lower Main Street area where he disappeared walking up Volin Street. Oien was alone in the videos no one appeared to be chasing him.

Oien’s friends did a welfare check of his hotel room Jan. 14. The check revealed that Oien had not slept in his Bullock Hotel room Sunday.

Christopher recently moved to Spearfish from Gillette, Wyo., and his mother said this is highly unusual behavior for her son.

Search area for missing Spearfish man to expand

Monday’s search focused on the Burnham Hill area.

“We re-searched there and a new area above Brown Rocks,” Fuller said. “That’s where the hot spot was identified, on top of Burnham, between the new construction area at Cadillac Jack’s and the Hills Apartments.”

A grid search of the hot spot area and a canine search have both been conducted over the last week.

Although Oien was exhibiting bizarre behavior on tape and appears to be being pursued, police have not been able to substantiate foul play.

Attempts to locate the whereabouts of 28-year-old Christopher Oien have been unsuccessful. Two cadaver dog teams searched a very large area in the vicinity of Burnham Hill for around six hours Wednesday and came up with negative results. Same thing for the box culvert/swift water rescue search conducted the next day.

The last time Oien was seen on video in Deadwood was Jan. 15 around 1:44 a.m., after he gathered his belongings from the hotel he checked into for a Sunday stay-over, and, instead, left.

Oien was later captured on a Deadwood Welcome Center parking lot camera going through the parking lot on the opposite side of the street from the former Four Aces and making his way up Volin Street, up toward Williams Street.

Although Oien was exhibiting bizarre behavior on tape and appears to be being pursued, police have not been able to substantiate foul play.

Fuller said that prior to Oien’s abrupt early morning departure from the Bullock Hotel, Deadwood Police received a 1:30 a.m. call in reference to Oien.

“At that point, he had gathered his possessions and left,” Fuller said.

DEADWOOD — With various other measures exhausted in the search for a Spearfish man missing for more than two weeks, law enforcement has implemented the use of a drone to hunt the “hot spot” area in Deadwood that 28-year-old Chrisopher Oien’s cell phone last pinged from.
The last time Oien was seen in town was on video tape Jan. 15 around 1:44 a.m., after he gathered his belongings from the hotel he checked into for a Sunday stay-over, and, instead, left.

Footage of Oien was later captured on a Deadwood Welcome Center parking lot camera making his way through the parking lot on the opposite side of the street from the former Four Aces and making his way up Volin Street, up toward Williams Street.
Although Oien was exhibiting bizarre behavior on tape and appears to be being pursued, police have not been able to substantiate foul play.

Fuller said that prior to Oien’s abrupt 1:44 a.m. departure from the Bullock Hotel, Deadwood Police received a 1:30 a.m. call in reference to Oien.
Oien’s mother, Hope Oien, of Gillette, Wyo., says this type of behavior is very unusual for her son.

Oien was last seen wearing a lightweight black and blue jacket with a hoodie underneath, baseball cap, and jeans. He is 6 feet tall, weighs 155 pounds, and has strawberry blond hair and blue eyes.

From the above quotes:

The last time Oien was seen in town was on video tape Jan. 15 around 1:44 a.m., after he gathered his belongings from the hotel he checked into for a Sunday stay-over, and, instead, left.

Oien was exhibiting bizarre behavior on tape and appears to be being pursued

This immediately reminded me of Lars Mittank, a German tourist who vanished in Bulgaria a few years ago. He also left his hotel in the middle of the night and acted bizarre, telling his mom on the phone that he was being chased. Many of us who discussed his behaviour (some of it also caught on tape) in his thread suspect some kind of psychotic break or onset of schizophrenia, or something similar. He was clearly paranoid.

I wonder what the call to police prior to him leaving the hotel was about. Was Christopher disturbing other guests?

I hope we will hear more details about his background and circumstances. Why did he check into the hotel? What was he doing in Deadwood?

The family of missing 28 year old Christopher David Oien offers reward

Christopher’s mom, Hope Oien, says “this is just unusual of him. He wouldn't leave his family for this long. He wouldn't, he just wouldn't do this. It is just very unusual behavior for him.”

Meanwhile Christopher’s aunt has similar feelings.

"It is horrifying. You just don't ever think you have to go through this. It puts you in a place where no one ever thought you would have to go," said Julie Smith.

Deadwood police can confirm that Christopher Oien was near the new visitors’ center in the early morning hours of January 14.
He's seen in footage of the area taken around 1:45 that morning.
Police have extensively searched the area between the Deadwood Event Center and Denver Avenue.

Deadwood Police Chief, Keller Fuller, explains “he was running through a parking lot across the street up Volin and into the Burnham Street area. We did locate a piece of Chris' clothing within the search area. Other than that, no we have had negative results on all our efforts."
The family is offering a two thousand dollar reward for information that leads to the whereabouts of Christopher Oien. He is 6 feet tall, 155 pounds, with hazel eyes and blonde hair or may be bald.
