Bless their hearts. While that would be amazing if he was, after two months and a threat of self-harm? So unlikely. I hope they find his body ASAP so his family can grieve.

Southeast Idaho Teen Who Threatoned Self-Harm Still Missing
An Idaho Falls teenager who left a note for his family back in January and disappeared, is still the focus of a statewide search.

Matthew Hall has not been seen by family since January 22, according to a profile on Ihavevanished.com. It has been reported that a note left at his residence implied Matthew had plans of harming himself. Police departments across the state have been notified, and are currently watching for a 2009 silver Nissan hatchback Hall was driving at the time.

It is very strange to me, when a car is not located in these situations. I mean, if you kill yourself, you can't hide the car.....but I guess you can hide the car (in a body of water) and then walk out somewhere and THEN kill yourself. But if you commit suicide, why would you even care if your car was found? Makes no sense to me.

Family still waiting for son eight months after disappearance

From the article:

Attempts to locate Jed by his phone have been unsuccessful.

[...]

The one clue of Jed’s intentions comes from a journal left outside when he took the car. Allen was looking near the door where Jed had exited the house and found it in the snow.

The journal detailed items Jed intended to take with him. He listed not only survival supplies, but also plans to disguise himself, blend in so no one would notice him.

Allen said his son enjoyed a show with a similar premise, a 2017 CBS series called “Hunted.” The show was about teams of two attempting to avoid investigators for four weeks. Allen Hall said his son picked up on two mistakes the losing teams made: they used their phones, or they tried to contact friends and family. He would talk with family about the show and how to disappear, but never so intently that they thought he would attempt it himself.

[...]

Allen said he believes his son is smart enough to make it on his own. He said Jed is experienced at camping, including during the winter. Even so, Allen keeps himself ready to leave at any time.

There is a radio interview with Jed's father (July 2018) in the article linked below, and he says that Jed is a straight-A student, the principal at his school describes him as the perfect student, and as far as his father is concerned, he is the perfect kid. Jed helped mentor kids at his school, was a member of the civil air patrol, and there were no warning signs whatsoever.

The journal was basically a packing list, but also included actions Jed might take to stay off the grid. The location of the journal led his father to believe that Jed did not intend for it to be found.

What stood out to me is that although Jed took things to camp if he needed to, and he's experienced camping in the winter, he didn't necessarily take gear for camping in winter conditions. His father didn't ever believe the theory that Jed is off camping somewhere.

Jed used his phone up until about 4:00 a.m. on the day he disappeared. His Dad believes his son is out there, traveling and living off-the-grid.
