Mall of America slasher says Islamic State inspired attack

MINNEAPOLIS - A 20-year-old Minneapolis man accused of attacking two brothers at the Mall of America says he was inspired by the Islamic State group.

Mahad Abdirahman has pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree assault for the November knife attack. His plea deal calls for 15½ years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 16.

At the plea hearing Thursday, Abdiraham's attorney read a statement — which is public record — to the courtroom, which explained why he attacked the two men.

In the statement, Abdiraham said he went to the Mall of America to answer the "call for jihad by the Chief of Believer, Abu-bakr Al-baghdadi, may Allah protect him, and by the Mujahiden of the Islamic State."

The statement added, "I understand that the two men I stabbed know and have explained the reason for my attack, and I am here reaffirming that it was indeed an act of Jihad in the way of Allah."

When this stabbing attack happened in November 2017, there was what many perceived as attempts by the media to sanitize the motive of the attacker, and shield his name and description from the public. Great lengths at obfuscation (quite intentional, IMO) were attempted by the media, and the Bloomington Police Chief Jeff Potts, to try to simply pass this off as a "random" stabbing attack, or as some kind of "shoplifting", or attempt to "steal the clothing" of the victims in the dressing room.

Multiple people were stabbed inside the Mall of America on Sunday night, leaving families and kids stunned as they waited to see Santa.

“My daughter could see people lying on the ground who had been stabbed,” Kim Schwieters, who was waiting to see St. Nick with her three children, told the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

At least three people were wounded in the attack, which is being described by police as “an interrupted theft.”

This was not a "minor attack"-- it was a severe, violent,
unprovoked, and savage attack, and IMO, was clearly attempted murder. The stabbing wounds went to the bone, and one victim required a blood transfusion.

And it is very clear that the attacker NEVER attempted to "steal" the clothing of the victims, nor tried to "shoplift" any merchandise.

The victim’s family heard him screaming, and a 25-year-old family member went to his rescue with another family member, according to the complaint. The 25-year-old victim tried to grab the knife and suffered stab wounds to his hands and back. He needed 42 stitches to close the wounds on his back.

Authorities say the 19-year-old victim needed a blood transfusion and will have permanent scars on his head.
