Mujey Dumbuya, 16, was reported as a runaway in Grand Rapids on Jan. 25. Her death is being investigated as a homicide. Police said the investigation is ongoing, declining to release the teen's cause of death and whether police have a suspect or a motive in the case. The teen's body was found in a wooded area near Blakeslee Street and Prairie Avenue on the city's northwest side. Two people were on a walk when they found the body on Jan. 28 and contacted KDPS.

“Shaniya Johnson, a friend of the Dumbuya, said, "I loved her like she was my own little sister. It's not the same, I haven't ate in 24 hours."

Johnson, a close friend of the victim, believes she was kidnapped on her way to catch a city bus to school near eastern avenue in grand rapids.

She said, "She's not a runaway, Mujey never ran away from home. She loved her family. Mujey had a little brother that she always loved to go home to every day."”

[h=1]Family disputes teen found slain was reported as runaway[/h]
Police say she was reported as a possible runaway Jan. 25 in Grand Rapids, about 50 miles away. Family members say, however, that she was reported as missing — not as a runway — after she left for the bus a day earlier and didn't show up at school.

Across the country, police departments have fielded concerns that missing teens are too quickly classified as runaways even though that may not be the reason for their disappearance -- and that the dangers faced by teens who do run away are minimized, an issue that has gained publicity in the Washington, D.C. region.
Dumbuya's death comes days after after a Virginia teen police initially believed was a runaway was found murdered.
Hhaa Corneh, Dumbuya's aunt, told CBS affiliate WWMT that she believes her niece was targeted and attacked.
"She didn't run away. She was just missing. She has a great family that loves her and she is a delight to everybody," said Dumbuya.

It's kind of a slippery slope. So many teens do run away and show up a few days later. I'm not sure how you weed them out though.

How about just not using the runaway label at all, no mater the circumstances?

This is not directed at you "always reading" or anyone in particular but this rant has been forming in my mind for a while. Even teens who "only" runaway are vulnerable and possibly in danger. In fact, I think the frequent runners who come back after a few days each time are in more danger because of apathy. Family might be hesitant to report them after several times, figuring they will come home in a few days, and police less likely to expend resources to find them. A perception that no one cares just encourages them to stay away from home longer and/or makes them vulnerable to anyone in their lives who wants to harm them and claim they "just ran away again". By using the runaway label it not only minimizes the investigation the police may do, it also minimizes public concern for their well being. People don't take it as seriously and may not look for them or may not bother calling police if they see them. In the meantime that "runaway" teen may have been taken in by a trafficker, drug dealer or gang members and be in serious danger because of their life on the street or the adults who took them. Maybe instead or using the runaway label when teens go missing we should figure out what factors make teens most likely to runaway and work to educate teens today on what kind of dangers they are in if they do runaway from home. And also more help for teens that have gone missing to help them readjust when they come back. Missing teens seems to be an epidemic because of the internet and the ease with which predators can use it to convince teens to "run away". Just because they chose to run away doesn't mean they are not victims-- many "runaways" leave home at the encouragement of an adult who has ulterior motives. Choosing to run away does not mean they don't regret that decision later. When teens come back home after being labeled "a runaway" they don't easily lose that label. They may take it to heart and be more likely to run again because that has become part of their identity and what everyone expects of them. They may self harm because they don't want to tell their peers about what really happened to them. Or if nothing too bad happened they may think it's a joke and run again-- staying away longer the next time and putting themselves in more danger. Bottom line is, there is nothing good coming from the runaway label, so why use it at all? How about extending equal public concern to every missing teen? JMVHO.

**Stepping down off my soapbox**

:truce: **Sorry for the off topic rant**

:tears:praying for her loved ones and for justice.

Mujey was due to testify in a rape trial against Quinn Anthony James that was scheduled for April. James, 42, is now a person of interest in her death.

Two months before she disappeared, Dumbuya told police James – raped her in a parking lot near Ridge Park Charter Academy. Dumbuya said James, who was employed by the Kentwood Public School District, forced her to have sex numerous times in various places starting from when she was 15.
