“We’ve uncovered what we believe is a clandestine grave in this backyard,” Stark County Coroner Dr. Anthony Bertin said.
Bertin said they found a small plastic container on wheels about six feet underground. It was about 3 ½ by 2 ½ feet big and believed to contain the remains of an adult.
“It’s very heavy. We believe that it may contain some concrete, he said. “We believe that it’s probably been there about a year.”

He would not reveal the possible gender of the victim.

Neighbors said it was not uncommon to hear saws at the home, where former residents allegedly claimed to work in three services.

Last week, neighbors say they witnessed their arrests and young children were taken away.

Late Friday afternoon, the state’s crime lab transported the box to the morgue where it will be opened and the contents photographed.

Investigators are not revealing the identity of the person who tipped them off to the discovery and say they have a pretty good idea of who the victim may be.

MASSILLON, Ohio-- Investigators discovered a body in the backyard of a Massillon house, where three children were removed last week.

Massillon police and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation started searching around the home on 8th Street Southwest on Thursday.

The Stark County Coroner's Office said a large, plastic container was removed from yard. It appears there may be human remains encased in concrete in the storage box.

The container, which measures about 3.5 feet by 2.5 feet, was locked. The coroner's office said it appears someone used a small excavator about a year ago to dig the hole about 6 feet down.
According to police, officers were following up on a case involving a man who's been missing since summer. They received a tip the missing man was last seen at this house.

The Canton Repository reported the man was beaten to death.

Investigators have not released the dead man’s name nor what information led investigators to his body, buried in a yard behind a house on Eighth Street Southwest.

Detectives, however, did tell the Canton newspaper they had identified two people of interest in the case — a man jail since December and a woman arrested Thursday on charges of endangering children.

Neighbors told Beacon Journal news partner News 5 Cleveland that people who lived in the house where the body was found moved out a couple of weeks ago.

Relatives of Nick Stein — a man who was reported missing last year — fear the remains belong to him.

His family told News 5 he lived at the house for a few months with a man and a woman but disappeared last February.

Police records show Massillon officers went to the house on Feb. 9 of last year in reference to the missing persons report, but Stein was not there.

Family friend Paula Cline told News 5 he paid for a billboard and shared his picture thousands of times on social media, hoping to find him.

"I think it's absolutely horrible. I looked for him for a year. I spent hundreds of hours and money looking for him," she said.

Police records also show officers were at the home two weeks ago to serve an active arrest warrant. According to a police report, there were three children, all under the age of 3, found inside the home who were "badly neglected."

"The living conditions of the home were unsafe and unsanitary and children were also abused," the report said.
A dog that was "extremely malnourished" was found in the basement. Police said it also had open wounds. The three children were taken from the home, as was the dog.

Stein, 25, was reported missing sometime last March. Cline last spoke with him about a year ago. She said she frequently spoke with Stein over the phone from her Kansas home.

According to Cline, she convinced a family member of Stein’s to report him missing to the police six weeks after he was last seen. Cline said Stein came from a hard home life and was living at the Eighth Street SW house when he went missing.

“Today, we unearthed an unexpected grave,” wrote Massillon police Capt. Paul Covert in a Friday news release. “A large black tote was recovered. The tote is believed to contain human remains.”
The release came on the second day investigators had been digging in the backyard after using cadaver dogs and following leads in their investigation to help pinpoint a location. The container was unearthed and turned over to the Stark County Coroner’s Office, police said.
Officials were expected to examine the contents and perhaps do an autopsy if conditions allow for one, and police were waiting for the coroner’s findings to follow up with the investigation.

Cline said she had been working with Detective Jamie Slutz at the Massillon Police Department for more than a year to find the missing Stein. A week ago, she said, Slutz told her police would be searching the Eighth Street SW property after Kristen N. Lain was arrested on Thursday.

A law enforcement official said Lain, 28, is a “person of interest” in the case.

Massillon detectives were expected to travel to Lorain Correctional Institution to interview Bryan Gentry, also a person of interest. Gentry was arrested last March on a charge of receiving stolen property. Court records show he lived at the Eight Street SW house at the time. Gentry was incarcerated Dec. 1, 2017.

Lain was picked up on a charge of endangering children, a misdemeanor. A judge increased her bond Friday from $25,000 to $100,000.

Cline said Stein worked with Gentry at a pallet shop. She added the two did not get along. About a week before Stein disappeared, he told Cline that Gentry had held a gun to his head and threatened him. Cline hinted the feud might have been over Gentry’s girlfriend, Lain.

Stein lived with Gentry and Lain for nearly two months before he went missing.

• STEIN was murdered by Gentry, because Gentry was jealous of Stein & Lain for whatever reason..

• GENTRY & LAIN (or at least, Gentry)
place STEIN’s body/parts in a big white rolling plastic cooler “like you buy at Lowe’s or Home Depot”, then pour concrete inside of it, then Gentry gets an excavator/digging machine and buries STEIN in the back yard 6’ft deep in the middle of the yard

• STEIN’s absence is noticed by his out of town loved one, who then convinces a local relative and/or friend to report STEIN’s absence to LE

• LE ‘Officially’ LIST STEIN AS MISSING!’

• STEIN’s out-of-state Loved ones are Frantically searching for him, for information about his life, etc...Eventually, they post a Billboard asking for Help & Offering a Reward

• LE actively SEARCHing for STEIN

• GENTRY is Arrested and Jailed on unrelated charges

• LE are Searching for STEIN & Information Leads them to the Massillon Address as the place STEIN last lived..(possibly state employment records? or found out during investigation/interviews)

• A Child Abuse/Neglect Report is filed (or) When LE show up to ask Lain about STEIN, they see the conditions of the house, and Arrest Lain, on Child Abuse and Endangerment Charges
(Imho the State should also file neglect/abuse charges against Lain for the condition of the dog, which LE found in the basement with, as I understand it, open wounds)...LE takes Lain into custody/arrests her, and take 3 children ages 3 & under into LE/State Custody..

• After arresting Lain & interrogating her about STEIN, Lain gives up information that STEIN is buried in the backyard.

• LE got to the house with cadaver dogs to verify their “Anonymous Tip”, that there was “a body” in the backyard, the cadaver dogs alert to there being a body, but due to the location under 6’ft of Earth, encased in concrete, and inside of a cooler, the dogs are unable to pinpoint an exact location..

• LE returns to Lain, and reinterviews, speaks with via phone, or has Lain brought to site at house to further pinpoint the exact location of where STEIN is supposed to be located

• LE locate “unexpected body”, via “Anonymous Tip” (*laughs so hard at that*..[emoji849])...discuss the container, state that they believe it to be an adult (I do not believe they state if male or female), and give no further details, except that they ‘have a pretty good idea of who it might be’...

• LE take the body back to the lab for examination, and learn that the adult male, was beaten to death...

• LE schedule trip out to Jail/Prison where Brian Gentry is currently incarcerated in order to question him about STEIN’s disappearance and subsequent murder..

Gotta Luv that LE isn’t discussing the case!..*laughs*...It will certainly be interesting to see/watch how all this pans out and if the ‘trigger’ for the house arrest/dig was really an ‘anonymous source’, (yeah right), or LE showing up to question Lain in passing about STEIN’s disappearance..

Twenty-seven-year-old Carl Spencer, of Hartville, was jailed on $5 million bond after his arraignment Monday in Massillon Municipal Court.

Defense attorney Derek Lowry says Spencer is pleading not guilty, but Lowry declined to comment further.
Spencer is charged in the death of Nicholas Stein, who's been missing for a year and was staying at the 8th Street SW home where investigators last week dug up a body. Authorities have yet to publicly confirm the identity of the remains buried in a plastic container several feet under the yard.

According to an affidavit, Stein was involved in a sexual relationship with the couple renting the home at the time of his death. The couple has since moved out. The female involved in the relationship told police Stein had wanted her to leave her relationship to date him, but she declined.

The woman also told police Spencer was staying at the home at the same time. She said she believed Spencer assaulted Stein over some sexual remarks he made to her, stating that Spencer may have thrown Stein down the basement stairs.
The woman said the day after Stein disappeared, Spencer became adamant about removing the basement steps and burned them in the back yard.
On Jan. 31, police confirmed that Spencer had rented an excavator on Feb. 2, 2017.

The woman also told police Spencer was staying at the home at the same time. She said she believed Spencer assaulted Stein over some sexual remarks he made to her, stating that Spencer may have thrown Stein down the basement stairs.
