Missing 13-Year-Old Girl Found Dead; Virginia Tech Student Charged With Murder
Posted 8:49 PM, January 30, 2016, by CNN Wire

A Virginia Tech freshman was charged with murder Saturday night after the body of a 13-year-old girl who disappeared from her home was found in North Carolina, said police in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Nicole Madison Lovell was last seen between 7 p.m. and midnight on Wednesday, police said...

The family was extremely worried because Lovell required daily prescription medication for a liver transplant and didn’t carry the medicine with her, police said.

The search ended Saturday afternoon when Lovell’s body was found about 100 miles away from home, Blacksburg police Chief Anthony Wilson said at a press briefing.

David E. Eisenhauer, 18, of Columbia, Maryland, was already in custody. He was arrested early Saturday morning and charged with felony abduction in the case, police said. Police said they acted on tips and social media to identify Eisenhauer

Second Virginia Tech student arrested in death of 13-year-old Nicole Lovell

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- A second Virginia Tech student has been arrested by Blacksburg Police in connection to the abduction and murder of 13-year-old Nicole Lovell, who went missing from her home in Blacksburg on January 27.

Police arrested 19-year-old Natalie M. Keepers and charged her with one felony count of improper disposal of a dead body and one misdemeanor count of accessory after the fact in the commission of a felony. Keepers is a student at Virginia Tech from Laurel, Maryland.

Natalie Keepers, 19, of Laurel, Md., now faces a charge of accessory before the fact to first-degree murder, meaning authorities allege that she played a role in the events leading to Lovell’s killing. She had previously been charged with concealing Lovell’s body and a misdemeanor accessory-after-the-fact count. The new charge carries a much stiffer maximum sentence upon conviction: life in prison

Investigators said they believe Eisenhauer had an inappropriate relationship with Nicole, a law enforcement official said. The girl was planning to expose their relationship, the official said, and investigators think this was the motive for killing her.

What you see in her mug shot according to Commonwealth’s Attorney Mary Pettitt, is not a scar, but a strand of hair. Pettitt said, after their arrest, both Natalie Keepers and David Eisenhauer “were subjected to a forensic exam to document any injuries, bruises or scratches.”

“Any relevant results of those exams will be presented in court,” Pettitt continued.

MSM update of what went on late yesterday afternoon:

First, a key claim by DE's attorneys — that a bloody handprint proved another person was present when 13-year-old Nicole Madison Lovell was killed — was undone by an expert witness’ testimony.

Minutes later, prosecutors called Blacksburg Police Department Det. Deziree Twigger back to the witness stand and asked her to tell the jury about the cellphone she’d seized from DE — and about the messages sent between DE’s phone and that of Natalie Marie Keepers, who is charged with helping him kill Lovell.

That set off a stream of objections from DE’s attorneys, then about 40 minutes of out-of-the-courtroom discussions — first between DE and his lawyers, then between prosecution and defense, then finally, after prosecutors had emerged smiling, between Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Robert Turk and all the attorneys.

When Turk returned, it was to send jurors home for the evening and to tell attorneys that whatever they wanted to say about the cellphones should be ready at 8:30 a.m. Friday.

Court hasn't started yet today, but I saw Nicole Lovell's mom and also her dad and step-mom in court today. Her dad was here for opening statements, but has not been here the past two days.

As @roanoketimes reported in 2016, Eisenhauer and Keepers exchanged messages in the days after Lovell’s murder, discussing how their own bodies smelled of cleaning solution and they were glad they did “overkill” because their lives were on the line, according to police testimony.

In the opening statement, Lichtenstein held up a giant picture of a shovel taken from Eisenhauer’s car, with a bloody stain on the handle that Lichtenstein said was a handprint. The blood was Lovell’s and the handprint was Keepers’, Lichtenstein said — and the print could only have been made at the time of Lovell’s murder, while blood still was wet enough to make the mark, he said.

But on Thursday, that theory fell apart.

Pettitt called Cory Bartoe, a forensic scientist with the state crime lab in Roanoke, to testify about the array of finger prints he found on items connected to Lovell’s death.

A bloody container of cleaning wipes found in the trunk of Eisenhauer’s car bore Eisenhauer’s finger prints, Bartoe said. Another container of wipes in the back seat had Keepers’ prints.

A plastic Walmart bag containing a bottle of bleach cleaner, found in dumpsters at a Tech parking lot with bloody gloves and wipes, also had Keepers’ prints.

But the shovel with the bloody handprint? It had two fingerprints from Keepers, Bartoe testified — but they were not in the bloody area of the shovel handle. There was a third print of some sort in the blood but it was too incomplete to identify, Bartoe said.

In earlier testimony Thursday, Twigger walked jurors through photos of Keepers and Eisenhauer buying the shovel on the day before Lovell’s murder. In one still from the Christiansburg Walmart’s surveillance video, Keepers carried the shovel.

This is a big development!

Both legal teams just went back into a conference room again. This time without Turk. It appears we have essentially picked up where we left off yesterday. Jury still hasn't been called to the box.

He also just posted that DE's parents left the courtroom, the gr-father stayed. Must not be having a good morning. Can't imagine being in their position.

Thanks everyone for the updates this morning, I don't have access to Twitter right now and rely on MSM which is delayed.
