The AN-148 aircraft had disappeared from radars shortly after taking off from Domodedovo Airport in Moscow.

The crashed Saratov Airlines’ An-148 has been spotted from the air in the countryside near Moscow, a rescue service source told Russia’s RIA news agency.

"It is in the field in the Ramensky District. Rescuers have not reached the scene yet," the source said.

The Saratov Airlines jet, which went off the radar earlier on Sunday, has been located in the countryside not far away from Moscow, a source in the local rescue services told RIA Novosti. Meanwhile, rescue teams are approaching the crash site on foot as they were unable to get there in their vehicles.

Flightradar24 tweets that the aircraft was descending at 1,000m (3,300ft) per minute (60km/h, 38mph) five minutes after taking off.

It looks like a horrid final few minutes -- look at the speed variations. Final decent was at 3300 ft mim

Wouldn't another aircraft show up on Flightradar though? I know the oilfield service choppers in the North Sea show up on it.

Apologies. Now it’s being reported that the plane’s engine exploded and no helicopter was involved.

I hope Vlad has an alibi, planes seem to crash when they are carrying someone Vladimir is upset with.

“A source from Russia's emergency services told Interfax that the passengers and crew 'had no chance' of survival.

Shocked witnesses reportedly said they saw a burning plane falling from the sky and wreckage was spread over a large area.”

May the victims Rest In Peace

Hi CARIIS.

BBM.....I cannot imagine the sheer horror & terror of being trapped on a burning plane. Those poor passengers. Prayers for all.

I hope Vlad has an alibi, planes seem to crash when they are carrying someone Vladimir is upset with.

I have been reading comments on two Spanish newspapers and speculation is along those lines too coupled with the fact the airline company's headquarters is located in Saratov, the place which Russian planes bombarding ISIS' Syrian enclaves leave from every day and the F-16 which went down yesterday in Syria.

So many wild theories on my country's newspapers and all of it convoluted...

RIP passengers and crew. Such a tragedy :(

I hope Vlad has an alibi, planes seem to crash when they are carrying someone Vladimir is upset with.

That was my first thought when I heard of this. Who was on the plane.

Thank you for your updates, CARIIS!!

In a statement released on Monday, the State Investigation Committee said it had determined important details. The plane was intact as it fell, it said; there was no evidence of a fire; and any explosion happened only after the plane began losing altitude.

This contradicted early claims made by local witnesses to The Independent, who suggested the plane fell apart while still in the air.

Do Russian airlines still have a safety problem?
